SAINT ODILO, ABBOT OF STABLO
This saint was first a monk of Gorze and then abbot of Stablo (Stabuletum, Stabulacum) in Belgium. In the biography of the blessed Abbot John of Gorze (Feb. III. 700), it is said that he, coming from a noble family, Odilo presided over his office as abbot with sufficient power and managed the administration of the house with great severity.
Nothing was more important to him than the poverty of Christ, which he preferred to all the dignity and honour of the earth. For this very reason he also had to carry out the reform of Stablo.
He has been venerated since ancient times (ab immemorabili). An old reliquary of Saint Remaclus contains his image among other patron saints of this abbey. The Bollandists* state that they saw a painting depicting Saint Odilo with his name written on it. But they were unable to locate Saint Odilo of Stablo's name in any martyrology.
