(1693) Maria Agnes Menzin, a pious innocent virgin of the Order of Saint Clare at Brixen, was born in Bozen on October 5, 1663 and made her profession on April 28, 1682. On September 23, 1686 she died a saint-like death at a very young age.  As long as she could she performed the prescribed prayers with extraordinary devotion, and was a paragon of all in punctual obedience to the orders of her superiors. (1693) Saint Adamnan (Adamnanus, Adomnanus) was abbot of the monastery of Hy on the island of Hy (Latin: Iona , one of the Hebrides, now Columbkill, i.e. cella Columbae ). In A.D. 701, the Picts sent him as peacemaker to Northumberland to King Alcfrid (Alfred).  On this occasion, in his dealings with the English clergy, Adamnan gained a better insight into the Easter dispute which prevailed in those regions between the Scots and the adherents of the practice now in existence. Fully informed by the English clergy about the new improved way of calculating Easter, Saint Adamnan realised the benefits of this method to such an extent that when he returned to his fatherland he did everything possible to get the Roman Easter celebration accepted. SAINT PIO OF PIETRELCINA, PRIEST  Born into a devout Catholic family on May 25, 1887, Padre Pio (original name Francesco Forgione, also called St Pio of Pietrelcina) consecrated himself to Jesus at age 5. At age 15 he joined the Capuchin order and took the name Pio in honour of St Pius I .  In 1910, the year in which he became a priest, he received the stigmata (bodily marks corresponding to the wounds suffered by the crucified Jesus) for the first time, though they eventually healed. He was drafted into the Italian military in 1915 for medical service during World War I but was shortly discharged because of his poor health. He received the stigmata again in 1918, and this time they remained with him until his death. BLESSED FRANCISCO DE PAULA VICTOR, PRIEST Blessed Francisco de Paula Victor was born on April 12, 1827 in the town of Campanha da Princesa da Beirathe, then part of the Empire of Brazil, to a slave, Lourenca Justiniana de Jesus, and an unknown father. He was baptised on the following April 20. His godmother was his mother's owner, Marianna Santa Barbara Ferreira, who was known for her treatment of her slaves with dignity. Under the tutelage of Marianna, Francisco learned how to read and write in addition to learning the French language and the nuances of the piano.  HIS SOLE DESIRE WAS TO BECOME A PRIEST Francisco was apprenticed to a tailor but his sole desire was to become a priest, which his mother held as being unthinkable, because her son was black and born out of wedlock.
