HILDEBALD, ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE Hildebald, Archbishop of Cologne  The name Hildebald is derived from the Old German child , meaning battle , and bald , which translates as mighty . Hildebald, Archbishop ( September 3 ; alternatively October 2 ). His name is also spelled Hildeboldus, Hyldebaldus, Hildibaldus, Hildivaldus, Hildialdus, Hildepold, Hiltibald, Hiddibald , and Addebald.   He was the first Archbishop of Cologne; prior to his tenure, the see had been occupied merely by suffragans of Trier and subsequently of Mainz. Castellanus*  and Gelenius* include him among the saints. He lived during the reigns of Emperors  Charlemagne  and Louis the Pious. He held the See of Cologne from the year 784 to 819. SAINT AIGULPH AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Monastery yard in the snow Saint Aigulph (Aigulf, Aigulphus ) and his Companions - specifically including Trucharius and Frongentius - are venerated as martyrs on September 3. Born around the year 630 at Blois ( Blesis ) on the Loire, Aigulph entered the newly founded monastery of Fleury at an early age, distinguishing himself there through piety as well as insight and wisdom. Hagiographers tell us that, when sent to Monte Cassino by his abbot, Mummolus, Aigulph retrieved the bodies of Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica (though likely only fragments thereof), thereby greatly enriching his monastery with this treasure.  When the monks of  Lérins  sought him as their abbot, he went there and established exemplary order, yet also incurred the hatred of the wicked. SAINT MANSUETUS, BISHOP OF TOUL Saint Mansuetus  Saint Mansuetus , Bishop of Toul, is variously commemorated on September 3, June 14, April 25, September 2. The older Bollandists * state that Saint  Mansuetus flourished in the fourth century, a date found in agreement with more recent research. According to According to Butler* , he lived during the reign of Emperor Constans, who held court in Trier and greatly favoured the spread of the Gospel in those regions. The  Gallia Christiana*   (121, 958) mentions his arrival in Toul in January 335; some other sources claim this event to have taken place in January 360. The  Bollandists *, however, assert that he could not have been Archbishop of this church, since no one of that name appears in the church records of bishops of Bourges. There must have been a confusion here, and the above details most likely describe the life of  Guicardus   instead of Burcardus . BLESSED GUALLA, BISHOP OF BRESCIA Blessed Gualla, whose name is also spelled Guala , Wala and Gaula , was born in Bergamo (not in Brescia) of the noble Romanoni family. He also studied there, and when  Saint Dominic  happened to preach in Bergamo, Gualla was deeply touched and felt called by divine grace to become a member of the new Order.  He then went on to found new religious houses himself, first in Bologna near  St Agnes , and then in Brescia (in 1220 or 1221). As prior of the new monastery he earned so much trust through his virtues that his mediation between the Bolognese and Modena residents, who were engaged in bloody warfare with one another, brought about a ten-year peace. Educated by both his father and Bishop Gerhard, the brightest future prospects seemed in store for him. But when, at the age of 24, he was supposed to take over the government of his father, who was willing to withdraw from the world, Emeric died in 1031 at Stuhlweissenburg (Alba Regalis).  Along with his father, was inducted into the company of official saints 52 years later. BLESSED HERMANN, HERMIT Blessed Hermann (Hermannus) was born in Heidelberg and brought up in a devout manner by his parents.
