ST FLORINA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR - 1 MAY

SAINT FLORINA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR Saint Florina, Virgin and Martyr, commemorated on May 1 , is said to have belonged to the company of Saint Ursula ; her relics are venerated at Mazoria in Auvergne, and their translation - along with those of Saint Valeria - is believed to have taken place under Bishop Louis of Langres towards the end of the 14th or the beginning of the 15th century. GREGORY OF GENOA, CAPUCHIN - 1 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 1st of May WELCOME! GREGORY OF GENOA, CAPUCHIN  Gregory, known as Gregorius Genuensis (from Genoa), is remembered on May 1. He was a Capuchin lay brother who took the greatest joy in self-denial. Despite his strictness toward himself, he was so kind and loving to all he met that everyone left comforted and strengthened. A noble woman who always fainted when hearing death mentioned in conversation was completely healed by his simple consolation.  Long before his hour had come, Gregory predicted his own passing, including the fact that he would be buried not among his fellow brothers, but far from them. In fact, he died in 1579 in a field hospital, as he was ministering to the sick during the plague, and was buried there and then. The gravediggers tied a rope around his feet and laid him in the graves reserved for plague victims. His soul "was carried to heaven by the angels." (Flor. Seraph. I. 427) (Information from...

TAKASHI NAGAI, AUTHOR - 1 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 1st of May WELCOME! TAKASHI NAGAI, AUTHOR Born in 1908, Dr Nagai, [the "Saint of Urakami"], died in 1951. He started his life in a Japanese country village. In his youth he adopted a fashionable atheism that continued into his years of medical studies. He was at his mother’s bedside as she died and later wrote, “I was so sure that there was no such thing as a soul. But my mother’s eyes told me that the human spirit lives after death. I could not but believe this.” He discovered the writings of Blaise Pascal, a famous scientist who passionately believed in God and prayer. Nagai fretted, “How to pray to a God he thought did not exist?” As a medical student, he found convenient lodging with the Moriyama family who had been Catholics for 300 years. The atmosphere of joy in their home touched him. The  Angelus bells from the nearby Cathedral at Urakami found an echo in his heart. The Moriyama’s had a daughter, Midori, a scho...

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 1st of May   WELCOME! BLESSED UBALD, HERMIT Blessed Ubald (Vivaldus), a hermit of the third Order of  Saint Francis  in Tuscany, was a student and companion of  Blessed Bartholus (Bartholinus), whom he lovingly cared for during his 20-year illness.  After his master's death, Ubald made his home in a hollow chestnut tree. When he died around 1300, the bells rang by themselves. A hunter was led by his dogs to the hollow tree in which he found the pious hermit on his knees lying dead. As soon as the hunter had made the announcement, the bells stopped ringing. Ubald was buried in the local church. (1693) A Frisian by birth, Saint Evermar (Evermarus) was of noble lineage. The desire to work and suffer for the glory of God drove him to the Tongeren region.  Around A.D. 700, a certain Hacco attacked and killed Evermar and his companions. SAINT MARCULF, ABBOT - 1 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 1st of May SAINT MARCULF, ABBOT A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's Saints' books, "Stammenbuch..." (1693) Saint Marculf  ( Marculphus , Helerius) was born in Bayeux c. A.D. 490. His parents were rich and respected people, who allowed him to take care of the poor and needy in their house and to feed them - even as a child. The boy did this for love for God, to whom he raised his innocent hands every day with childlike simplicity, and vowed to dedicate every day of his life to Him. He became a priest, and as such a zealous and popular preacher, and it is said that he spoke particularly often of the obligations imposed on us by receiving Holy Baptism. Saint Possessor, Bishop of Coutances, ordained him (c. 520). He gave him (according to Gall. Chr. IX. 243) the task to preach in the entire diocese. Gradually, however, the desire for greater seclusion arose in him. Therefore he built a hermitage in Nanteuil (Nantum...
