BL. AARON, ARCHBISHOP OF KRAKOW - 9 OCTOBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 9th of October WELCOME! BLESSED AARON, ARCHBISHOP OF KRAKOW Aaron was born in France and belonged to the Benedictine Congregation of Cluny under the holy Abbot Odilo . There he distinguished himself by such virtue and learning that his superiors appointed him the first abbot of the monastery in Krakow [Kraków], which had been newly founded by  Casimir I and for which the king had specifically requested monks from Cluny. Soon thereafter, the king himself raised him to the rank of Archbishop of Krakow. The new archbishop was held in such high esteem by the cathedral chapter of his see that they not only admitted all his successors in the abbacy as honorary members but also adopted Aaron's family coat of arms - three golden crowns on a silver background - as the chapter's own coat of arms; the cathedral chapter of Vilnius did the same. Bucelin’s Menologium Benedictinum * (Part II) lists him as Blessed Aaron, Archbishop ...

ROBERT GROSSETESTE, BISHOP OF LINCOLN - 9 OCTOBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 9th of October WELCOME! ROBERT GROSSETESTE, BISHOP OF LINCOLN Robert Grosseteste was Bishop of Lincoln and one of the most learned men of the Middle Ages; born about 1175; died October 9, 1253. He came from Stradbroke in the county of Suffolk. Little is known of his family, but it was certainly a poor one. His name is probably a family name.  The first definite date which we can connect with his life, is that of a letter written in 1199 by Giraldus Cambrensis to recommend him to the Bishop of Hereford. Giraldus spoke of his knowledge of the liberal arts and of literature, and of his excellent character and industry. We may also gather from this letter, that he was acquainted with law and medicine. If he was in 1199 a "master" of such distinction he must have gone to the young, but already very flourishing, University of Oxford not later than 1192 or 1193. That he afterwards studied and taught theology in Paris is int...

BL. GUNTHER OF BOHEMIA, HERMIT - 9 OCTOBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 9th of October WELCOME! BL. GUNTHER OF BOHEMIA, HERMIT   Blessed Gunther was a hermit in Bohemia in the eleventh century; he was born about 955; he died at Hartmanitz, Bohemia, October 9, 1045.  The son of a noble family, he was a cousin of St Stephen, the King of Hungary, and is numbered among the ancestors of the princely house of Schwarzburg. He passed the earlier of his life at court in the midst of worldly pleasures and ambitious intrigues.  He was converted in 1005 at the age of fifty by St Gotthard, Abbot of Hersfeld, later Bishop of Hildesheim, and resolved to embrace the monastic life in order to do penance for his past faults.  With the consent of his heirs, he bequeathed all his goods to the Abbey of Hersfeld, reserving the right to richly endow and maintain the monastery of Göllingen, the ownership of which he persisted in retaining despite all the efforts of St Gotthard to prevent him....

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 9th of October WELCOME! BLESSED JOHANNES LOBEDAVIUS   Johannes Lobedavius, also Johannes Thorunensis or Johannes Thorunio, Prutenus or Pruthenus ("The Prussian").  He was  a Franciscan priest, who was born in Thorn or Tournia (Thorunium, Torunia) on the river Weichsel in the Diocese of Kulm in West Prussia. The Polish priest Friedrich Schembeck, on whose work the Bollandists draw in a Latin translation, was able to re-establish the veneration through Archbishop Johannes Lipski of Gnesen. It had nearly ceased after Lutheranism contaminated Johannes Lobedavius' place of burial, Kulmsee. Fr Schembeck was not able to establish a great deal about the Blessed when going through old traditions and paperwork left by some bishops of Kulm.  The year of his birth is uncertain, but it can hardly have taken place before the year 1231, since this was the year the city of Thorn had been founded by the Knights of the T...
