He died in 1574, at Quauheavac, near Mexico, in the West Indies, at the age of eighty, with a reputation of excellent virtue and piety. (Hub. Men.) SAINT SIMPLICIUS, ABBOT OF MONTE CASSINO - 22 OCTOBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 22nd of October SAINT SIMPLICIUS, ABBOT OF MONTE CASSINO Saint Simplicius, the third abbot of Monte Cassino, was a direct disciple of the founder of the Order, St Benedict. St Simplicius died around A.D. 570. His elevation under the Abbot Desiderius - later Pope Victor III - took place around the year 1071. This solemn exhumation is also mentioned by the Bollandists*. (Lech. and III. 768.) St Simplicius is also commemorated on March 29. LEONTIUS, ABBOT OF ST MAURICE Leontius was abbot of St Moritz [St Maurice], who ruled this old abbey at the beginning of the 7th century for 5 years, 5 months, 4 days. He died in the odour of sanctity around A.D. 606, on October 22. Some write his name Leonimus , as Burgener* does; but on the older registers of the abbots one never wrote anything other than Leonz. SAINT OELBERT, MARTYR Saint Oelbert (Oelbertus), who is also known as Olbertus, Albertus, Odelbertus, died according to Molanus * at Oisterheut near Breda, in the bishopric of Antwerp. Tradition relates that some assassins caught in the act fled from the scene and, while running through some fields, came across Oelbert, who, exhausted from several hours' farm labour, had dozed off. The murderers placed the incriminating weapon - a bloody dagger - in the sleeping man's hand. When the pursuers came, they killed him as a murderer. Oelbert's decapitated body carried the severed head to a nearby chapel. The animals he had used for ploughing miraculously brought the building materials for the erection of a much larger church - on their own initiative, without a carter. He lived under the false gods of National Socialism and Communism, eventually triumphing over both. Although his pontificate coincided with a profound crisis in western Christianity, worldwide Catholicism grew rapidly. Saint John Paul II guided the Church firmly into the new millennium. CHILDHOOD He was born in Wadowice, near Krakow, in 1920, the youngest of three children of Karol and Emilia Wojtyla. A doctor reportedly advised Emilia to have an abortion, insisting that she would not give birth to a live child. But, of course, she refused. Emilia died when Karol was just eight and, along with the premature deaths of his sister and brother, this would deeply affect him. His father died in 1941.
