(1693) Nicolò Bandinello (Nicolaus), a hermit near Siena (Erem. S. Silvae Ilicitanae), is said to have died in A.D. 1250. According to other sources, he lived and died later than that. (1693) John de Vallibus [Devaux] (Johannes de Vallibus) was a Franciscan who lived in Umbria. Hub. Men .* lists a Johannes de Vallibus on January 7 and says of him that he died in A.D. 1351 at Pistia (Brullianum) in the valley of Spoleto. (I. 319.)   SALADIN, HERMIT Saladin (Saladinus) was a hermit at Ascoli Piceno, where he lived a penitent life for 27 years. He died on April 4, 1241. In 1649, his mortal remains were rediscovered at the cathedral church where they had been interred under the altar of Saints Michael and Maurus. From there they were then transferred to the Loreto Chapel. The local faithful venerate him as "blessed".  Saladin is also remembered on July 25. Because of his profound humility, St Theon concealed his most extensive knowledge of the Egyptian, Greek and Roman sciences and refused all conversation with men in order to occupy himself with God alone.  He never ate anything cooked, just raw food; when he left his cell it was usually at nighttime. His companions in the desert were wild animals, for whom he drew water from his well, which is why his cell was often surrounded by buffalo oxen, goslings, and forest donkeys.  The saint performed many miracles and was considered a prophet in the whole area. In 1272 he was sent as a delegate to Constantinople to invite the participation of the Greeks in the Second Council of Lyons.  Two years later he succeeded St Bonaventure in the generalship of his order. While he was on a mission to France to promote the restoration of peace between that country and Castile, he was created cardinal-priest with the title of Santa Pudenziana (1278) and in 1281 Martin IV appointed him Bishop of Palestrina. Formosus was probably a native of Rome, and must have been born about 816, since, at his death, he is characterised by Vulgarius as an old man of eighty.  The earliest historical information we possess concerning him is his nomination by Nicholas I as Cardinal-Bishop of Porto in 864. SAINT BENEDICT OF PALERMO, RELIGIOUS He was widely respected for his deep, intuitive understanding of theology and scripture, and was often sought for counselling. Saint Benedict was born in 1526 to Cristoforo and Diana Manasseri, Africans who were taken as slaves in the early 16th century to San Fratello, a small town near Messina, Sicily.  Cristoforo and Diana had earlier converted to Catholicism and, although St Benedict never received any schooling, he learnt all about God and the Catholic Faith from his parents. St Benedict grew up on a farm, a slave like his parents. At the age of 18 St Benedict was given his freedom, the land owner fulfilling an earlier promise to his father for the good work he had done as a foreman of the field workers.
