THE BLESSED MARTYRS OF ALGERIA - 8 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 8th of May WELCOME! THE BLESSED MARTYRS OF ALGERIA In the late 20th century, Algeria was shaken by civil war. Amid this violence, nineteen Catholic men and women made the deliberate choice to stay in the country; they did not see themselves as apart from the people among whom they lived, and they refused to abandon them in their hour of trial. Between 1994 and 1996, all of them were killed. Those who suffered include Trappist monks from the Atlas monastery; the Armed Islamic Group owned up to the murders. CHRISTIAN DE CHERGE AND COMPANIONS The seven Trappist monks Christian de Cherge (the prior of the monastery), Luc Dochier, Christophe Lebreton, Michel Fleury, Bruno Lemarchand, Celestin Ringeard, and Paul Favre-Miville had been kidnapped on March 27, 1996 after 20 armed men stormed the place. The monks were later found decapitated. They are listed as killed on May 21, 1996. The funeral for these holy men took place at Notre-D...

The Counts of Calw, as protectors of the monastery, had  sadly been instrumental in bringing it into this pitiful condition.  Pope Leo IX , who happened to came to Germany, saw the sad state of affairs and demanded from Count Adalbert, his relative, the restoration of the monaste...

ST GODON, BISHOP OF METZ - 8 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 8th of May WELCOME! SAINT GODON, BISHOP OF METZ Saint Godon (Godo) who, according to Migne * is also called Gon, was Bishop of Metz. Little has come down to us with absolute certainty. Saint Gosricus, his predecessor, administered this diocese around A.D. 638.  Clodulphus, Godon's successor, flourished around the year 650. Between these to dates Godon's time as bishop is generally assumed to have taken place, which lasted eight years altogether.  Migne* (dict. hagiogr.) , however, states that Godon's episcopate began in 647, and that he is - for unknown reasons - revered as the patron saint of glovemakers and perfumers. According to Saussaius *, Godon carried out the episcopal duties alongside Clodulphus, which we regard as highly implausible. Saint Godon's mortal remains rest at St Symphorianus in Metz.  (Information from  Stadler 's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints,  Volume  2, Augsburg, 1861, pp...

SAINT METRONES, PENITENT - 8 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 8th of May SAINT METRONES, PENITENT Saint Metrones is a beautiful and edifying example of the strictest penance. He lived - at a time unknown - with a chain fastened to a stone like a criminal, in Verona. Perhaps a German by birth, but more likely, judging by the derivation of his name, a Greek (cf. Maji VII. 654), he had committed incest with his daughter, although unknowingly. When he later intended to become a priest, the bishop imposed a penance on him, which he aggravated in the manner indicated above. He threw the key to the chains into the river Etsch, with a vow not to get rid of them until a fish was caught that had the key in its entrails. After several years, this case really happened through divine providence. Stone and chain have long been shown at St Vitale, where the saint rests. He died in Verona. An elevation of his relics took place on May 7, 1658; on that occasion they were placed into a more valuable ...
