BL. HUMBERT OF SAVOY, PRINCE AND RELIGIOUS - 16 DECEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 16th of December WELCOME! BLESSED HUMBERT OF SAVOY, PRINCE AND RELIGIOUS This Prince Humbert of Savoy, born in 1136 at the Castle of Avigliana in Piedmont, succeeded his father Amadeus III in 1149 (according to Pierer * in 1148) in the government of Savoy. Since he was still a minor, and his mother died early, and his father was called away on crusade, Bishop Amatus of Lausanne supervised the prince's education, and because his father died on the return journey from the Holy Land, Amatus had to take over the regency as well. After Blessed Humbert came of age, he wielded the reins of government with wisdom and justice, brave in war, severe to criminals, merciful to penitents, loyal to the King of kings. After a while, after putting the kingdom in order, he retired to the monastery of Haute-Combe (Alta Cumba). Later, when the enemy invaded the country, he left his solitude, chased the intruders away with arms, and returned

JOHN VIII., POPE - 16 DECEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 16th of December WELCOME! JOHN VIII., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index (Sat from A.D. 872-82) He was a Roman and the son of Gundus. He seems to have been born in the first quarter of the ninth century; he died December 16, 882. In 853 and 869 he appears as archdeacon of the Roman Church, and it was as such that he became pope (December 14, 872).  His election was opposed by Formosus, who remained in opposition to him throughout the whole of his pontificate. All modern historians are agreed that John was one of the greatest of the great popes who sat on the chair of Peter during the ninth century. Some, however, on what would seem to be insufficient grounds, regard him as cruel, passionate, worldly-minded, and inconstant. The more important acts of John's reign may be divided into four groups, according as they relate to the affairs of Eastern Europe, to the empire of the West, to Southern Italy and the Saracens, or to those

SAINT ADO, ARCHBISHOP OF VIENNE, CONFESSOR Saint Ado was born in the diocese of Sens, towards Gatinois, about the year 800, and was of one of the richest and most noble families of that country. It was the principal care of his religious parents to seek tutors, masters, and companions who should concur together by their maxims, example, interior spirit, and prudent and earnest instructions to form the morals of their son, and inspire into his soul the most tender and perfect sentiments of Christian piety.  All this they happily found in the monastery of Ferrieres in Gatinois, at that time famous for learning and discipline. The pregnancy of his wit, the solidity of his judgment, his assiduity at his studies, and, above all, his humble obedience and docility, and his sincere piety, gained him the esteem and affections of the abbot Sigulph, and all his masters; and engaged them to redouble their care a
