SAINT GERALD, ARCHBISHOP OF BRAGA Braga Cathedral   Descended of noble family in Cahors, Saint Gerald  (Geraldus),  also called  Giraldus, Gerardus  and  Geraudus , was offered by his pious parents as a sacrifice to God before he was even born.  He entered the Congregation of Clugny (Cluny) and soon became very famous for the purity of his life and his musical talents, so much so that  Bishop Bernard of Toledo gave him the position of cantor at his cathedral church.  Saint Gerald was eventually appointed Archbishop of Braga in Portugal. He preached with great zeal and watched over the flock entrusted to him with tender care. He died as the father of the poor at the beginning of the 12th century (according to  Migne * in 1109). As early as 1452 he was a member of the Carmelite Reformers of Mantua. These men strove to prevent a relaxation of the original Carmelite rules, placing a particular emphasis on the former ideals of poverty and solitude.  POVERTY AND SOLITUDE For thirty-five years he laboured at his local church as Spiritual Director and - having been a most devoted client of the Blessed Virgin for his entire life - as the head of the Confraternity of Our Lady. He passed to his eternal reward in 1495. PRAYER: May the intercession of the blessed Bartholomew commend us to you, O God, so that through his merits we may obtain that which we cannot accomplish by our own. John Almond died for the Catholic Faith.  He was born about the year 1577 at Speke, so one account says, or on the borders of Alperton, as he himself states in his examination. He went to school at Much Woolton, and passed thence to the English College at Rheims and then to that at Rome.
