LAURENCE, ABBOT OF VILLERS - 17 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 17th of May WELCOME! LAURENCE, ABBOT OF VILLERS  Laurence (Laurentius) , remembered on May 17, was a monk at Clairvaux Abbey to start with. A student of  Saint Bernard , Laurence afterwards became the first abbot of the  Cistercian  monastery of  Villers  / Villiers  (Villaria) in Brabant. The establishment flourished under Laurence's leadership: the initially small monastery, through the holiness of its monks and the generosity of the faithful, became one of the most distinguished in Belgium.  Laurence loved holy poverty to the highest degree and bore all its hardships with admirable patience. He had the oratory and the huts for the brothers built from tree branches; his sustenance consisted of vegetables and water, and his clothing barely covered his limbs. After his term had ended, he continued to serve God in utter humility, and concluded his holy life, glorified by miracles, in 1154...

ST BRUNO, BISHOP OF WÜRZBURG - 17 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 17th of May WELCOME! SAINT BRUNO, BISHOP OF WÜRZBURG Saint Bruno died on May 27; he is listed in the Roman Martyrology on May 17. Bruno, Bishop of Würzburg, was a son of Conrad, Duke of Carinthia, and Countess Mathilda, of the House of Querfurt and Mansfeld, and nephew of Saint Bruno , Bishop and Apostle of the Russians and Prussians, whom he is said to have been named after. Quite a few details of his life are shrouded in mystery. We know, however, that, because of his high virtues, he was elevated to the episcopal see of Würzburg [Germany] in 1033 and that he oversaw his flock with wisdom and true pastoral zeal for more than eleven years. The Cathedral of St Kilian is still the most beautiful monument to his pastoral zeal and active piety. When he was forced to travel to Hungary with Emperor Henry III, known as the Henry the Black, in 1045, and was staying with him at Rosenburg Castle not far from Ips [Ybbs] on the Danube, t...

ST CATHAN, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR - 17 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 17th of May WELCOME! SAINT CATHAN OF BUTE, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR  Saint Cathan flourished in the sixth or seventh century. His relics in the isle of Bute were so famous in Scotland, that the island was often called Kil-cathan.  Kil signifies a church or oratory, as Kilbraid, Kilpatrick, etc. (From Fr Butler's Lives of the Saints) *** Cathan (Catan, Cadan) was a saint who flourished in the sixth or possibly in the seventh century. He appears to have been a Bishop in the Isle of Bute, often called after him Kil-cathan. He was, it is said, Irish by birth, and the uncle of Saint Blane. Colgan says that he died after A.D. 560, and his tomb is shown at Tamlacht near Londonderry. The Scots contend that he rests in the Isle of Bute. It is possible that there may have been two Saints of the name. (From The Book of Saints, 1921, by the Monks of Ramsgate)

All the revenge he took of them was to obtain their pardon from the emperor.  Four years after this, the idolaters in a riotous festival on the 1st of June, had the insolence to dance round the church, throw stones into it, and set it on fire, wounding several of the clergy, and killing one upon the spot.  HE PUT A WORD IN FOR THE RIOTERS Nectarius, a principal person among the heathens, who had no share in this tumult, wrote to St Augustine to beg him to intercede with the emperor for the...

SAINT FEAST DAY 17 MAY: ST PASCHAL BAYLON

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 17th of May WELCOME! SAINT PASCHAL BAYLON, RELIGIOUS [On 17th May] one of the saints celebrated by the Church is Saint Pascal Baylon [Paschal Baylon]. Saint Pascal was born in 1540 at the border of Castile and Aragon. As a youth he tended his family’s sheep on the mountain. He had to grow accustomed to the loneliness of a shepherd’s life and taught himself to read so that he could pray the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, a popular prayer book at the time. Saint Pascal always tried to do the right thing, so whenever his sheep caused any damage to a neighbour’s property he would admit the damage and pay for it out of his meagre resources. "I HAVE NEVER NOTICED THE LEAST FAULT IN HIM" At the age of twenty-one, Saint Pascal joined the reformed Franciscans of St Peter of Alcantara at Loreto. As a lay brother, Saint Pascal served for many years in the religious house as the doorkeeper and porter. He tried his best always to...
