ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 26th of June WELCOME! BLESSED JACQUES GHAZIR HADDAD, PRIEST AND FOUNDER Khalil al-Haddad was born on February 1, 1875 in Lebanon; he was baptized on February 21, 1875 in the Maronite church located in his town and received the sacrament of Confirmation on February 9, 1881. He attended school in Ghazir from 1885 until 1891 and then at the College de La Sagesse in Beirut where he studied the Arabic language in addition to French and Syriac. In 1892 he left Lebanon and served as a teacher of Arabic at the Christian Brothers' College of Saint Mark's in Alexandria in Egypt from 1892 to 1893 where he felt a strong call to the religious life. He entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in Khashbau at Saint Anthony's on August 25, 1893 and received his religious name in honor of Saint James of the Marches; he professed his perpetual vows in 1898. SAINT ANTHELMUS, BISHOP OF BELLEY - 26 JUNE

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 26th of June SAINT ANTHELMUS, BISHOP OF BELLEY Saint Anthelm (Anthelmus) was a native of Savoy who, after being Provost of a Cathedral Chapter, entered the Carthusian Order and became Prior of the Grande Chartreuse. During the Schism of 1159 he defended the rights of Pope Alexander II against the Anti-Pope Octavian, and thereby incurred the enmity of the German Emperor, Frederick Barbarossa. The Pope consecrated him Bishop of Belley, and sent him to England as his legate at the time of the dispute between King Henry II and Saint Thomas à Becket. There he rendered important services to the Church and to the country. Saint Anthelmus died during the famine which devastated a large part of France in the year 1178. He later undertook the preaching of Christianity to the Pagans of Flanders, and met his death at their hands in the neighbourhood of Valenciennes, together with Saint Superius, his priest or deacon. This happened in the 8th century. ST PELAGIUS OF CORDOBA, MARTYR - 26 JUNE

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 26th of June ST PELAGIUS OF CORDOBA, MARTYR In Cordoba , Spain, Saint Pelagius died for the Catholic faith at the age of thirteen. Prior to his martyrdom, he was kept at the court of the Caliph Abderrahman III as a hostage for several Moors who were to be set free by his uncle, Bishop Hermogius von Tuy, in Spanish Galicia. It appears that this condition was not fulfilled three years later, and the boy was offered liberty and life only on condition of apostasy. But Pelagius displayed the piety and the courage of faith of the Israelite youths in the Babylonian captivity and replied heartily: "I would rather endure all tortures than deny my Saviour." Embittered by this speech, this "most intelligent and lovable ruler" ordered for the youth to be pinched with red-hot tongs and to be torn into pieces. SAINT JOSEMARIA ESCRIVA, PRIEST Born in Barbastro, Spain, on January 9, 1902, St Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer y Albas was the second of six children of Jose and Dolores Escriva, and grew up in a devout Catholic family environment. From 1918 onwards, feeling called, Saint Josemaria studied for the priesthood. His father died in 1924, and, being now head of the family, he moved his mother and siblings to Madrid with him. Here he ministered to the faithful, having been ordained as a priest. HE FOUNDED OPUS DEI In the late 1920s, he founded Opus Dei, an institution within the Catholic Church dedicated to helping people in all walks of life to follow Christ, to seek holiness in their daily life and grow in love for God and their fellow men and women.
