SAINT LUPIAN, CONFESSOR Saint Lupian ( Lupianus ), commemorated on July 1, was a confessor at Rez ( Ratiatum ) in Brittany. According to  Gregory of Tours , he was baptized by  Bishop Hilary and is said to have died that very week. Several miracles occurred at his grave: a blind man regained his sight, a lame man the ability to walk, and a mute man his speech. He is also invoked in French litanies. Without their knowledge and against the will of his parents he left the world at an early age and entered the monastery of Sedaciae .  After he had served God here for a while with all zeal and even received the gift of miracles, he retired (with the permission of his abbot Martin) to a remote wilderness in the vicinity of Angouleme (Engolisma).  Ordained a priest by the bishop of that city because of his saintly conduct, he gathered about him some disciples, whom he established in the life of godliness. He also turned his love to the captives, many of whom he ransomed with charities from generous believers.  After living in his cell for 40 years, he died in the Lord in A.D. 581.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 1st of July SAINT HILARY OF OISÉ, PRIEST AND CONFESSOR A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's Saints' books, "Stammenbuch..." (1693) According to the tradition of the Diocese of Le Mans (apud Cenomanos), this Confessor lived and died in the small village of Oisé (Aviciacum), between Le Mans and la Flèche, which is why he is surnamed Aviciacensis . Saint Hilary (Hilarius Aviciacensis) allegedly flourished at the end of the 4th century. A biography of him is not available. Tradition relates that he was related to Bishop Hilary of Poitiers and ordained by him.  When the latter was exiled to Phrygia by the Arians, our Saint Hilary, too, had to take up the walking staff. He arrived at the Le Mans region, where Bishop Victurius gave Hilary the order to evangelise the surrounding villages.
