Challoner, New Edition, Thomas Jones, London, Paternoster Row, 1842 On the 26th of March (some say the 25th) of this [1586] or the foregoing year, for authors are divided about the time, Mrs Margaret Clithero [ Clitherow ], whose maiden name was Middleton, a gentlewoman of a good family in Yorkshire, was pressed to death at York. She was prosecuted, under that violent persecution raised in those times, by the Earl of Huntingdon, lord president of the North. The crime she was charged with was relieving and harbouring priests. She refused to plead, that she might not bring others into danger by her conviction, or be accessory to the jurymen's sins in condemning the innocent.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 5th of August WELCOME! BLESSED ROBERT BICKERDIKE, MARTYR  ⬅️ The Holy Martyrs of England and Wales [Blessed] Robert was a martyr, a Yorkshire layman, born at Low Hall, near Knaresborough (date unknown), but residing at York; he died on August 5 (or October 8), 1585.  Arrested for giving a priest,  John Boste , a glass of ale, he was also accused at his trial of using treasonable words. He was acquitted, but Judge Rhodes, determined to have his blood, had him removed from the city gaol to the Castle and tried once more at the Lammas Assizes on the same charge. He was then condemned.  One of his offences was that, when Francis Ingleby was being dragged on the hurdle to execution, hearing a minister's wife say: "Let us go into the Tolbooth and we shall see the traitorly thief come over on the hurdle", he said, "No; no thief, but as true as thou art".
