ST MARIA ANTONIA DE PAZ, MISSIONARY - 7 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 7th of March WELCOME! SAINT MARIA ANTONIA DE PAZ, MISSIONARY Pope Francis elevated Maria Antonia de Paz y Figueroa, the first female saint from his native Argentina, to sainthood. At the age of 15, she left the comfortable life at home and her family’s privileges to join the Jesuits. Even though the Jesuits had been expelled from Latin America then, she encouraged spiritual practices like prayer and meditation, walking thousands of kilometres barefoot, and involving the rich and the poor in her initiatives.  Pope Francis first authorized her beatification in 2016 after the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints recognised a miracle linked to her: the inexplicable healing in 1905 of a seriously ill nun belonging to the religious order in charge of the House of Spirit...

(1693) While  Saint Benedict  was instituting his rule on Mount Cassino, this holy abbot's contemporary Equitius was trying with all zeal to settle pious religious the region of Valeria, which lies between ancient Umbria, Picenum and Campania. These holy men would then spend their lives in prayer and manual labour, scattered throughout the countryside and in the woods. Their spiritual father often visited them to teach them; he also sought, wherever and however he could, to encourage them to better love and serve God.  Since he was only a layman, however, his conduct was universally disapproved of and he was accused of presuming to carry out ecclesiastical official functions. The pope defended our saint and forbade further troubles. Pope Gregory I became his biographer and testified to his godly life with...

(1693) Margarita de Piazza was born in Sicily. Her father's name was Thomas Matthia and her mother's name was Angela Negra. Both were very pious, and rejoiced greatly when they saw that their little daughter, from a very young age, was showing many signs of future sanctity. Therefore they gladly allowed the pious child to take the habit of the Third Order of Saint Francis. From then on, the young girl began a solitary and penitential life in a secluded apartment of her father's house.  When her mother had died, her widowed father got married for a second time, and Margarita continued this austere lifestyle together with her saintly brother at another solitary dwelling. This brother must have been a priest, for it is said that she once saw angels serving him at Mass. She gathered poor girls t...

His name was widely known, so much so that his  monastery was usually called "John's Abbey" (Johanneskloster) at the time.
