SERVANT OF GOD JULIUS KAMBARAGE NYERERE Servant of God Julius Kambarage Nyerere The Diocese of Musoma, Tanzania, has opened a cause for the beatification of the country's former president, Julius Nyerere (April 13, 1922 - October 14, 1999). A spokesman for the diocese says that the local investigation into Nyerere's life has authorization from the Vatican. Nyerere, a devout Catholic who attended Mass daily throughout his public life and was known for fasting frequently, was a respected African leader for three decades. Already an influential figure in the British colony then known as Tanganyika, he became the country's first prime minister after independence in 1961, and was elected president the following year. After a time as abbot of Ripatorium (Larrivour, La Rivour), he became bishop of Auxerre. Eventually, he resigned his episcopal dignity and ended his earthly pilgrimage as a monk in the monastery at Clairvaux in 1160. He is known as Alanus Insulensis ("of the islands"). On a pilgrimage to Jerusalem he also touched southern Italy, where he died around the year 1100. At Arcanum (the place where his relics are enshrined) he is venerated as confessor. Many miracles are ascribed to him, notably many healings of the blind and the mute. His name occurs also in the Roman Martyrology on this day. SAINT ANGADRISMA, ABBESS Saint  Angadrisma (French Ste-Angadrème) was the daughter of Count Robert, Major domus of King Clotair III. She was born around the year 614 in what is now Beauvais ( Bellovacum ) in France.  The love of religious virginity was the reason for St Angadrisma's ardent wish to live in eternal chastity. However, her parents wanted her to get married to  Saint Ansbert (who subsequently became Archbishop of Rouen). The parents had already made arrangements for her betrothal.  But God sent St Angadrisma a disease from which she was restored, but yet remained so disfigured that her parents felt compelled to give up the idea of their daughter's marriage. Recognising a special disposition of divine goodness in this incident, she sacrificed herself entirely to the Lord and, with the consent of her parents, went to Rouen, where she received the veil from the hands ...

SAINT GAUDENTIUS OF RIMINI, BISHOP AND MARTYR   Saint Gaudentius was a 4th century Bishop and Martyr; feast day: October 14. Born at Ephesus, he came to Rome about A.D. 308, and embraced the Ecclesiastical state. He was ordained priest A.D. 332.  Fourteen years later he became Bishop of Rimini, and suffered with the other Catholic prelates from the Arians, who dominated the famous Council of A.D. 357. In fine, he was done to death by these enemies of the Faith (A.D. 359 or A.D. 360).
