JOHN GOODMAN, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 8 APRIL

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 8th of April WELCOME! VENERABLE JOHN GOODMAN, PRIEST AND MARTYR  John Goodman  was born in the diocese of Bangor, in North Wales, from whence he is called Bangoriensis , in the diary of Douay college. He was the son of William Goodman; was brought up in the protestant religion, and sent to the university of Oxford, where he spent a long time in his studies, and was at length made a minister after the protestant manner.  But growing dissatisfied with his religion, by the remonstrances of some friends, he left both his gown and his country; and going beyond the seas, was, at Paris, received into the church by the Reverend Mr Richard Ireland, then residing there; and by him, recommended to Dr Kellison, the president of Douay college, where he arrived February 12th, 1621, and was admitted amongst the alumni of the college.  In the year 1622, September the 24th, I find him presented to the four lesser orders; ...

VENERABLE JOHN GOODMAN, PRIEST AND MARTYR John Goodman , priest and martyr; born in the Diocese of Bangor, Wales, 1590; died 1642. He was educated at Oxford, and ordained a Protestant minister, but abandoning heresy, he crossed over to Paris, where he was received into the Church by Mr Richard Ireland.  Admitted to Douai College, February 12, 1621, he continued his studies there until 1624, when he proceeded to St-Omer, in order to enter the Society of Jesus. Finding, however, that this was not his vocation, he was ordained a secular priest and sent on the English mission. He worked with unremitting zeal for some years, was twice apprehended and twice released. JOHN OF CAPRARIA, RELIGIOUS - 8 APRIL

(1693) John of Capraria (Johannes a Capraria), a Franciscan lay brother, came from noble parents in Alcantara (Norba Caesarea). His upbringing did not teach him physical work, but he learned to perform all the menial tasks in order to be accepted as a lay brother. After taking his vows, he became a veritable paragon of virtue. Hub. Men .* states that John died in Valverde (Vallis viridis) in 1575. Immediately after his death, the faithful began to venerate John as a saint. (I. 740) Joanna of Portugal attributed her recovery to his intercession. LUCIA OF THE ANGELS, VIRGIN - 8 APRIL

(1693) Lucia of the Angels (Lucia ab Angelis) was a pious virgin of the Third Order of Saint Francis, who was born of godly parents on the island of Saint Michael. There she lived all her holy life, and died a happy death in 1622. While she was still alive, the Lord graced her with the gift of healing the sick, and even after her death many miracles happened through her intercession . (Born) . BL. MARTIN OF RIMINI, RELIGIOUS - 8 APRIL

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 8th of April BLESSED MARTIN OF RIMINI, RELIGIOUS A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's Saints' books, "Stammenbuch..." (1693) Unfortunately, the vita (biography) of this blessed Martin (Martinus) is not devoid of fiction and later additions.  He is said to have been from Rimini and to have distinguished himself early on as a brave warrior. In a fit of violent anger, he once committed a murder.  He took refuge in the area of ​​Genoa, where he atoned for his misdeeds in the greatest severity in a cave between the towns of Peghi and Voltri and used all his spare time for tailoring for the poor.  The prior of the monastery of Saint Benignus in Genoa took pity on him and upon his death buried him not far from the bell tower. (1693) Pope Gregory IX  summoned William (Guilielmus), who first was abbot of Villers (Belgium), and later of Clairvaux, together with a number of other abbots and bishops to Rome to participate in the Lateran Council. William was part of a group of abbots that were imprisoned by Emperor Frederick II; he died as a result of the maltreatment suffered during this harsh and unjust incarceration. (1693) Blessed Julian of Saint Augustine (Julianus a S. Augustino) was, as detailed in Hub. Men .*, a Franciscan lay brother. The son of a French knight, he first saw the light of day in Spain. Even as a boy he was very pious; at the age of 18 he entered the Order of Saint Francis at the Observant Monastery of Saint Mary of Salceda, which was in Castile and belonged to the province of Saint Joseph.  Probably to test his virtue all the more, God allowed him to be to be dismissed by the monastery. (1693) Matthew (Matthaeus) is listed as the forty-sixth bishop of Cosenza in Calabria. He was a born Earl of Ayeta. Once, when he stayed at Pesto, not far from Capaccio, near the ruins of the ancient Paestum, lightning struck his bedroom and set his bed on fire without any harm coming to him. In thanks for this protection he dedicated his life to God as a cleric and went to the mission house in Rome.  Endowed with a captivating gift for oratory, he brought about numerous conversions. In his thirty-third year  (on October 3, 1667) Pope Clement IX consecrated him Bishop of Cosenza (Consentia). MARIA ELEONORA DE ROHAN, VIRGIN AND ABBESS - 8 APRIL

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 8th of April MARIA ELEONORA DE ROHAN, VIRGIN AND ABBESS A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's Saints' books, "Stammenbuch..." (1693) This servant of God, daughter of Hercules of Rohan, Princes of Soubige and Maria de Bretagne was born on January 6, 1629. She felt called to religious life and entered the monastery in 1644.  Maria Eleonora de Rohan made her vows on April 12, 1646. In 1651 she became abbess at the Trinity Monastery in Caen and in 1664 at Malnoue ( coenobium Malanca ) in Paris.  She shone wonderfully in every virtue, especially poverty, humility, patience in illness, and died godly on April 8, 1681, on Easter Sunday. In her epitaph it says, among other things:  "As long as virgin brides of the single bridegroom live in this house, as long as there are Christians in the world and believers in the church, her memory will be blessed there."
