ST AUGUSTALIS, BISHOP OF ARLES - 7 SEPTEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 7th of September WELCOME! SAINT AUGUSTALIS, BISHOP OF ARLES Saint Augustalis, commemorated on September 7, was a Bishop of Arles in France who lived between the 3rd century and the middle of the 4th. He is to be clearly distinguished from the later Bishop Augustalis , who attended the Council of Orange. The  Roman Martyrology * states simply, under September 7, that he is venerated in Gaul - without specifying his episcopal see. This is likely because the martyrology's author, Baronius* , accidentally mixed up these two bishops. Therefore he could not possibly assign this see to our saint, given that during the latter's lifetime , a certain Hilarius signed the acts of that council as Bishop of Arles. ST VIRGILIUS, BISHOP OF ARLES - 10 OCTOBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 10th of October WELCOME! SAINT VIRGILIUS, BISHOP OF ARLES Saint Virgilius, commemorated on October 10 and 19, as well as March 5, was initially abbot of the Saint Symphorian  monastery  in Autun. His investiture and residence at the monastery in  Lérins  are uncertain. As prelate, he succeeded  Saint Honoratus , unless Licerius was his immediate predecessor. It is not entirely clear when he ascended to the episcopal see of Arles. When  Saint Gregory the Great  became pope in 590, Virgilius had already held his office for a few years. Even during his lifetime,  Gregory  called him a holy man, adorned with all virtues , and placed the bishops in the realm of King Childebert II under his see. The missionaries who traveled to England were especially commended by the pope to his protection. Indeed, Saint Virgilius was such an extraordinary man that he himself was considered a miracle...

ST HILARY OF ARLES, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR - 5 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 5th of May WELCOME! SAINT HILARY OF ARLES, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR    (A.D. 449.) Saint Hilary of Arles was nobly born, about the year 401, and was related to St Honoratus of Arles , and of the same country in Gaul, which was probably Lorraine, or some other part of Austrasia.  HIS EDUCATION He was brought up in a manner suitable to his birth, in the study of the liberal arts, and of every branch of polite learning, especially of eloquence and philosophy.  "NEITHER SCIENCE NOR BIRTH CAN EXALT US" But how little value we ought to set on all things that appear great in the eyes of the world he himself has taught us. “We are all equal,” says he, “in Jesus Christ; and the highest degree of our nobility is to be of the number of the true servants of God. Neither science nor birth, according to this world, can exalt us, but in proportion to our contempt of them.”  THE WORLD'S SEDUCING CHARMS AND PLEASURES Befo...

ST TROPHIMUS OF ARLES - 29 DECEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of December WELCOME! SAINT TROPHIMUS, BISHOP OF ARLES Today, we also commemorate Saint Trophimus, bishop. The Roman Martyrology states:  "At Arles, the birthday of Saint Trophimus, mentioned by Saint Paul in his Epistle to Timothy. Being consecrated bishop by that Apostle, he was the first sent to preach the Gospel of Christ in that city. From his preaching as from a fountain, according to the expression of Pope Saint Zosimus , all Gaul received the waters of salvation." PRAYER: Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Trophimus, your blessed bishop, may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
