ST PIGMENIUS, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 24 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 24th of March WELCOME! SAINT PIGMENIUS, PRIEST AND MARTYR Saint Pigmenius, priest and martyr of Rome, taught many in the Christian faith and was thrown into the Tiber in the year 363. We know nothing more about the cause and perpetrators of his death. Some sources state that the prefect Apronianus , out of hatred for Christians, organized a kind of persecution and killed many of the believers. Other writers attribute the blame to temporary mob uprisings caused by the followers of the abandoned pagan temples. A pious matron named Candida retrieved the lifeless body of Pigmenius from the river and buried it in the churchyard of Pontianus. Part of his relics is said to have later come to Prague. His "Acts," in which he is also credited with the education of Emperor Julian , as well as an address he is said to have given to this emperor in Rome, are fabricated.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 24th of March WELCOME! SCIRIA, VIRGIN AND FOUNDRESS ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Sciria (Scire), commemorated on March 24, was a virgin and monastery foundress in Ireland. The place name Kill Skire (Meath) is a reminder of this holy lady. Sciria is listed in the  Martyrology of Tamlact *. The Bollandists * mention her among the praetermissi. BL. BERTA DE BARDI, ABBESS - 24 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 24th of March WELCOME! BLESSED BERTA DE BARDI, ABBESS Blessed Berta [Bertha de Bardi], abbess of the Order of Vallumbrosa [Vallombrosians], descended from a count's family, took the veil in the monastery of St Felix in Florence. This she did to serve Jesus Christ.  At the behest of her superior and all the sisters, she went to Cauriglia (Capriola) in the diocese of Fesoli to rebuild the monastery there, which had fallen into complete disrepair. After ten years as abbess, she died on the night of Easter Sunday 1163. THE ULMA FAMILY - 7 JULY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 24th of March WELCOME! THE ULMA FAMILY A devotional leaflet about  the Ulma family  Blesseds Jozef (b. 1900) and Wiktoria (b. 1912) Ulma are also remembered on July 7 , their wedding anniversary. They were killed for harbouring Jews during the Second World War (on March 24 , 1944 ). Along with the Jewish ladies and gentlemen whom they hid, the couple's children, aged between 7 and newborn, were victims of this barbarous execution.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 24th of March SAINT EPIGMENIUS, PRIEST AND MARTYR Saint Epigmenius was the priest who converted Saint Crescens  (Crescentius) and his parents to the Christian faith. During the Diocletian persecution, the judge Turpius sentenced Saint Epigmenius to death by beheading. This holy martyr is also listed in the Roman Martyrology * on this day. SAINT ARTEMON, BISHOP - 24 MARCH

SAINT ARTEMON, BISHOP Artemon is a Greek name, meaning sail, fore sail (top sail).  Saint Artemon was a native of Seleucia in Pisidia and is said to have been consecrated bishop by Saint Paul the apostle during his stay in this city (Acts 13:4). Bishop Artemon was a special friend and protector of the poor. He died at a ripe old age. SAINT AGAPITUS, BISHOP OF SYNNADA - 24 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 24th of March SAINT AGAPITUS, BISHOP OF SYNNADA Saint Agapitus was bishop of Synnada in Phrygia and famous in his day for the many miracles that happened through him. Since the Emperor Maximin wanted to have him killed as a magician, he escaped his rage by fleeing and died unchallenged in peace. The church historian Eusebius mentions his miracles, and his name is listed in the Roman Martyrology * on March 24.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 24th of March NICHOLAS V., POPE    ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index (Tommaso Parentucelli) A name never to be mentioned without reverence by every lover of letters, born at Sarzana in Liguria, November 15, 1397; he died in Rome, March 24, 1455.  While still a youth he lost his father, a poor but skilful physician, and was thereby prevented from completing his studies at Bologna. He became tutor in the families of the Strozzi and Albizzi at Florence, where he made the acquaintance of the leading Humanist scholars of the day. In 1419 he returned to Bologna, and three years later took his degree as master of theology. The saintly bishop of Bologna, Niccolò Albergati, now took him into his service.  For more than twenty years Parentucelli was the bishop's factotum, and in that capacity was enabled to indulge his passion for building and that of collecting books. SAINT ALDEMAR THE WISE  Born in Capua, the young boy Saint Aldemar was sent to the Abbey of Monte Cassino, where he became a Benedictine monk. He became spiritual director to religious in Capua where he was known for many miracles. He was first abbot of a new monastery in Bocchignano, Abruzzi and founded several more houses. St Aldemar died in A.D. 1080. PRAYER: O God, who gladden us each year by the feast of the blessed Aldemar, graciously grant that, as we rejoice in his merits, we may be inspired by his example. ST WILLIAM OF NORWICH - 24 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 24th of March ST WILLIAM OF NORWICH (Many popes have either directly or indirectly condemned the blood accusation, and no pope has ever sanctioned it (Strack, op. cit., 177 and v).) Born 1132; died March 22, 1144. On Holy Saturday, March 25,, 1144, a boy's corpse showing signs of a violent death was found in Thorpe Wood near Norwich. It was not touched until Easter Monday, where it was buried without any ceremony where it lay. In the meantime a number of young men and boys had visited the spot and the Jews were suspected of the murder on account of the nature of the wounds ["Ex ipso penarum modo" (Thomas of Monmouth, op. cit. below, [p. 35); "non nisi judeos co maxime tempore talia gessisse asseritur" (op. cit., p. 36)].  The body was recognised as that of William, a tanner's apprentice, who with his master had been in the habit of frequenting the houses of certain Jews. ST OSCAR ROMERO, ARCHBISHOP OF SAN SALVADOR   Saint Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez (August 15, 1917 - March 24, 1980)  Many of our readers will remember the assassination of Archbishop Romero of San Salvador in 1980. Killed because he stood up for his oppressed people. He made public the horrific crimes being committed, many of them by agents of the government. Because of this he was under constant threat of death. But he would not be silenced, and to those who suggested that he go into hiding or exile he said, ‘At the first sign of danger the shepherd cannot run and leave the sheep to fend for themselves.
