JAMES HARRISON, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 22 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 22nd of March WELCOME! VENERABLE JAMES HARRISON, PRIEST AND MARTYR This gentleman, who, by some, is confounded with Matthias Harrison, (of whom we have spoken in 1599), and by others, is called Matthew Harrison, alias Hayes; in the Douay records and catalogue, is called James, and is said to have been a native of the diocese of Litchfield, ordained at Rheims, in 1583, and sent from thence upon the English mission in 1584.  He fell into the hands of the persecutors, a little before the Lent assizes, 1601-2; and being brought upon his trial, was sentenced to die, as in cases of high treason, barely on account of exercising his priestly functions in England. Raissius relates, that being told by his keeper, the night before execution, that he was to suffer the next day, which it seems was an unexpected piece of news, (for the judges had left the town, without determining anything of the time of his suffering,) he showed not...

ST DARERCA, SISTER OF ST PATRICK - 22 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 22nd of March WELCOME! SAINT DARERCA, SISTER OF ST PATRICK ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Saint Darerca, of Ireland, a sister of  Saint Patrick . Much obscurity attaches to her history, and it is not easy to disentangle the actual facts of her history from the network of legend which medieval writers interwove with her acts. However, her fame, apart from her relationship to Ireland's national apostle, stands secure as not only a great saint but as the mother of many saints.  When St Patrick visited Bredach, as we read in the "Tripartite Life," he ordained Aengus mac Ailill, the local chieftain of Moville, now a seaside resort for the citizens of Derry. Whilst there he found "the three deacons," his sister's sons, namely, St Reat, St Nenn, and St Aedh, who are commemorated respectively on March 3, April 25, and August 31. St Darerca was twice married, her second husband, Chonas, founded the church of Bo...

SAINT EPAPHRODITUS, BISHOP OF TERRACINA - 22 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 22nd of March SAINT EPAPHRODITUS, BISHOP OF TERRACINA The Roman Martyrology* relates that Saint Epaphroditus, Bishop of Terracina in Italy, was a disciple of the apostles, and that Saint Peter himself made him bishop of this city. It is further claimed that this Epaphroditus is the same who brought financial support from Philippi to Rome, and whom Saint Paul praises in his letters to the Philippians (2:25; 4:18), but this is not necessarily the case. Other sources suggest, however, that Epaphroditus was one of the 72 disciples. BL. CLEMENS AUGUST GRAF VON GALEN, BISHOP OF MÜNSTER - 22 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 22nd of March WELCOME! BLESSED CLEMENS AUGUST GRAF VON GALEN, BISHOP OF MÜNSTER Blessed Clemens August Graf von Galen was born of aristocratic ancestry on March 16 , 1878 at Dinklage Castle, Dinklage, Oldenburg, Germany. His motto was: Nec laudibus nec timore (neither by flattery nor by fear) "NEITHER BY FLATTERY NOR BY FEAR" He was ordained a priest and afterwards worked in Berlin at St Matthias. He intensely disliked the liberal values of the Weimar Republic and opposed individualism, socialism, and democracy. A staunch German nationalist and patriot, he considered the Treaty of Versailles unjust and viewed Bolshevism as a threat to Germany and the Church. He espoused the stab-in-the-back theory: that the German military was defeated in 1918 only because it had been undermined by defeatist elements on the home front. He expressed his opposition to secularism in his book Die Pest des Laizismus und ihre Erscheinungsfo...

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 22nd of March WELCOME! SAINT DEOGRATIAS, BISHOP OF CARTHAGE, CONFESSOR    Genseric, the Arian king of the Vandals, took Carthage in 439, filled the city with cruelties, and caused Quodvultdeus, the bishop, and many others, to be put on board an old leaky vessel, who, notwithstanding, arrived safe at Naples.  THE VACANCY WAS FILLED After a vacancy of fourteen years, in 454, St Deogratias was consecrated archbishop. ST LEA OF ROME, WIDOW - 22 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 22nd of March WELCOME! SAINT LEA OF ROME, WIDOW Saint Lea was a rich Roman lady. After the death of her husband she mortified her flesh by wearing rough sack-cloth, passed whole nights in prayer, and by humility seemed every one’s menial servant.  She died in 384, and is honoured on this day in the Roman Martyrology. St Jerome makes an elegant comparison between her death and that of Praetextatus, a heathen, who was that year appointed consul, but snatched away by death at the same time. From Fr Butler's Lives of the Saints SAINT LEA'S ENTRY IN STADLER'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SAINTS: Saint Lea [Leah] was a pious Roman widow who, after the death of her husband, distinguished herself by a high degree of humility and self-denial. She wore a hair-shirt, spent most of the night in prayer, and became the mother, as it were, of consecrated virgins who joined her. Her death took place around A.D. 383 in Rome. St Jerome, In his 24t...
