ST MAXIMINUS, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR - 23 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 23rd of February WELCOME! SAINT MAXIMINUS, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR Saint Maximinus, commemorated February 23 and January 2, was a bishop and confessor whose remains are venerated at Billom in Auvergne. The  Bollandists * list him among the  praetermissi. (III. 358). SAINT JUVENALIS, MARTYR - 23 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 23rd of February WELCOME! SAINT JUVENALIS, MARTYR Saint Juvenalis, commemorated on February 23, was a martyr whose relics are kept next to the body of the holy monk and martyr Syrenus, along with the mortal remains of Saint Maximinus, Bishop of Billon in Lower Auvergne. It is unknown who these latter two were and on which day they are venerated. The Roman Martyrology* mentions a  martyr Juvenalis on May 7, and Saussayus * lists three bishops and martyrs with the name Maximinus: one was Bishop of Trier , the other  of Besançon , whose feast is celebrated on May 29, and the  third of Aix , whose feast is celebrated on June 8; but it cannot be determined to which of them these relics belong. ST WILLIGIS, ARCHBISHOP OF MAINZ - 23 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 23rd of February WELCOME! SAINT WILLIGIS, ARCHBISHOP OF MAINZ This holy prelate is known as Willigis (Willegisus), Willigus, Willegus , and Willigizus ; he became Archbishop of Mainz on June 29, 975 and died after a glorious and meritorious life on February 23, 1011. The Mainz historian Falk claims Willigis to have been of aristocratic descent, but Thietmar and most other writers agree that this archbishop was of humble origins. In any case, he first saw the light of day in Schöningen, Braunschweig, in Germany. It is handed down to us that, when Willigis' mother was pregnant with him, she once saw the sun shining from her womb and illuminating the world with flaming rays - an omen that did come true. The boy showed good talents, virtue and an inclination towards the clergy from an early age. OTTO, ABBOT - 23 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 23rd of February   WELCOME! OTTO, ABBOT Otto ( Otho ), a biological brother of Count Gottfried von Cappenberg , initially an opponent of the new foundation, soon afterwards became its most zealous patron, and himself entered the Order of  Saint Norbert . He donated the Ilbenstadt monastery (Ilbenstadt Kloster), which he then headed as its first superior. (The monastery was only dissolved in 1803.) Later he transferred to Cappenberg and was the honourable head of this monastery for 18 years. He died in A.D. 1182 and was buried opposite his brother Gottfried at the high altar (III. 360). ORDONIUS, BISHOP OF ASTORGA Ordonius, bishop of Astorga (Asturicum) in the Spanish kingdom of Leon, is remembered on February 23. He flourished around A.D. 1075, but is not known to be publicly venerated by the Church. BL. STEFAN FREILICHOWSKI, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 23 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 23rd of February WELCOME! BLESSED STEFAN FREILICHOWSKI, PRIEST AND MARTYR ⬅️ 108 Martyrs of World War II As a Polish Scout prior to his entry into the seminary, Stefan Wincenty Freilichowski, born on January 22, 1913, "acquired a particular sensitivity to the needs of others" (John Paul II, beatification homily). He was ordained a priest in 1937.  His first assignment as a parish priest was at Torun, where he was arrested with several other priests by the Gestapo and released after a few days. In October 1939, he was again stopped and sent to various prisons and camps in succession, and finally Dachau (December.13, 1940). At each stop along the way, Blessed Stefan witnessed to the love of Christ through his humble service to others.  During the typhus epidemics at Dachau (1944-45), he brought spiritual comfort to the afflicted and dying until he himself contracted the disease, then developed pneumonia. SAINT PRIMIANUS, BISHOP OF ANCONA, MARTYR - 23 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 23rd of February SAINT PRIMIANUS, BISHOP OF ANCONA, MARTYR Saint Primianus, a bishop of Ancona and martyr, was Greek by birth, but of neither the time nor the place of his death are known.  In A.D. 1370 his relics were rediscovered at the church of Saint Francis of Paula, which formerly bore his name. At that time an old lady with a reputation for piety claimed to have received a revelation that the saint had died as a martyr a thousand years earlier, perhaps in the persecution of Diocletian. On May 10, 1609, his holy mortal remains  transferred to a new tomb. SAINT ARTHONGATE, VIRGIN - 23 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 23rd of February SAINT ARTHONGATE, VIRGIN Saint Arthongate (Eorcungoda), virgin at Farmoutiers, was the daughter of King Ercombert of Kent and Saint Sexburga . She came to France towards the middle of the 7th century and received the veil at Farmoutiers under the direction of Saint Sedrida and Saint Auberga, her aunts, who successively presided over that convent. EUGENE IV., POPE - 23 FEBRUARY

EUGENE IV., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Gabriello Condulmaro was born at Venice, 1383; elected March 4, 1431; he died at Rome, February 23, 1447. He sprang from a wealthy Venetian family and was a nephew, on the mother's side, of Gregory XII. His personal presence was princely and imposing. He was tall, thin, with a remarkably winning countenance.  Coming at an early age into the possession of great wealth, he distributed 20,000 ducats to the poor and, turning his back upon the world, entered the Augustinian monastery of St George in his native city. At the age of twenty-four he was appointed by his uncle Bishop of Siena; but since the people of that city objected to the rule of a foreigner, he resigned the bishopric and, in 1408, was created Cardinal-Priest of St Clement. BL. LUDWIK MYZK, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 23 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 23rd of February WELCOME! BLESSED LUDWIK MYZK, PRIEST AND MARTYR  ⬅️ 108 Martyrs of World War II Blessed Ludwik Mzyk was born on April 22, 1905 into a miner's family. He entered the seminary in Heiligenkreuz in his teens. Ordained in 1932, he joined the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) and then worked in the Chorzow Mission House. Following the German invasion of Poland, he opposed the invaders, was arrested and sent to the camp Fort VII (KL Posen). On the night of February 20, 1940 Bl. Ludwik was beaten and then dragged outside the fort, where he was shot in the head by a Junior Officer.  The incident was witnessed by several people. His body was disposed of in an unmarked grave. Bl. Ludwik is one of the 108 Blessed Polish Martyrs, who are commemorated on June 12.
