SAINT CONSTANTIAN, HERMIT Saint Constantian ( Constantianus, Constantius ), hermit in the French province of Maine, native of Auvergne (according to the Elenchus * he was actually an abbot), left his homeland at quite a young age and withdrew to the Micy monastery near Orleans, where he met  Saint Frambald . The desire for higher perfection led both of them to leave Micy in order to seek out some remote wilderness where they could live unknown to the world. They therefore settled in Javron Forest ( Gabrionum ) in the Maine countryside. Here St Constantian, ordained a priest by Bishop Innocent of Mans, brought about numerous conversions through his zeal, his gentleness and his prayers. Constantian won such a reputation for his holiness throughout France that even Chlotar I [Frankish ruler, Gaul, Neustria], when he passed through the Maine in 560, visited him and recommended himself to his pray...

SAINT EDMUND CAMPION, PRIEST AND MARTYR  St Edmund Campion (1540-81), English Jesuit, hanged in London His life has been published by Bombinus, and several others. What we here give is an extract out of the old English author, from whom we had our account of Mr Hanse, &c. whom we prefer to all the rest, as being more ancient, and personally acquainted with Mr Campion, and an eye witness to his death. His account was published in 1582. Edmund Campion was born in London, where he had his first education in Christ Church Hospital. SAINT RALPH SHERWIN, PRIEST AND MARTYR   [Saint Ralph was an] English martyr, born 1550 at Rodesley, near Longford, Derbyshire; died at Tyburn, December 1, 1581.  In 1568 Sir William Petre nominated him to one of the eight fellowships which he had founded at Exeter College, Oxford, probably acting under the influence of the martyr's uncle, John Woodward, who from 1556 to 1566 had been rector of Ingatestone, Essex, where Sir William lived. There Blessed Ralph took the degree of M.A., 2 July, 1574, and was accounted "an acute philosopher, and an excellent Grecian and Hebrician".  In 1575 he fled abroad and went to the English College at Douai, where March 23, 1577, he was ordained priest by the Bishop of Cambrai. SAINT ALEXANDER BRIANT, PRIEST AND MARTYR St Alexander Briant   ​Alexander Briant, English Jesuit and martyr, was born in Somersetshire of a yeoman family about 1556; executed at Tyburn, December 1, 1581. He entered Hert Hall, Oxford, at an early age, where his remarkable beauty and purity of countenance won for him the appellation, "the beautiful Oxford youth". At Oxford he became a pupil of Father  Robert Persons to which fact, together with his association with Richard Holtby, is attributed his conversion. Having left the university he entered the English college at Reims, whither Holtby had preceded him, and was ordained priest March 29, 1578.  Assigned to the English mission in August of the following year he laboured with exemplary zeal in his own county of Somersetshire. BLESSED RICHARD LANGLEY, MARTYR Richard Langley, a layman and martyr, was born probably at Grimthorpe, Yorks, England. He died at York, December 1, 1586.  From his father, Richard Langley, of Rathorpe Hall, Walton, he probably inherited Rathorpe, but for the greater part of his life continued to reside on his estate at Ousethorpe, in the East Riding. His mother was Joan Beaumont of Mirfield. He married Agnes, daughter of Richard Hansby, New Malton, by whom he had one son, Christopher (born 1565), and four daughters.  During the troublous times of the Elizabethan period Langley gave over his energies and a very considerable part of his fortune to assisting the oppressed clergy; his house was freely offered as an asylum to priests. SAINT LEONTIUS, BISHOP OF FRÉJUS Leontius, Bishop of Fréjus  (Forojulium) in Provence, born at Nimes in Languedoc, was a brother of Bishop St Castor of Apt , whose memory the church celebrates on September 21. As bishop of Fréjus Leontius set an example of the loftiest virtues. It was he who ordained the hermit  Saint Honoratus a priest and who persuaded him to settle in his diocese, namely on the island of Lérins . There Honoratus built the famous monastery , which he presided over until he was appointed Bishop of Arles.  St Leontius was also one of the Gallic bishops with whom Popes Boniface I and Celestine I corresponded on important church matters. ODDO, ABBOT OF SAINT SAVIN Oddo, a godly Benedictine of Ancy-le-Duc (Enziacum), bishopric of Autun, was instructed to re-establish good monastic discipline at the abbey of Saint Savin at Poitiers.  Among his virtues, his persistent zeal in prayer is particularly praised, for which he received great graces from the Lord even during his earthly life.
