ST AUGUSTA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR – 27 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March WELCOME! SAINT AUGUSTA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR Saint Augusta (March 27), a virgin and martyr of Serravalle in the March of Treviso ( Marchia Tarvisina ) in the Venetian region, was imprisoned and cruelly tortured at the instigation of her own father, who had discovered her at prayer. Her torments included having her teeth knocked out and being suspended between two trees over a fire. When none of this harmed her, she was beheaded with a sword. According to the work Attribute der Heiligen* [Attributes of the Saints] , she is usually pictured with a funeral pyre (the origin of which is unknown to us) accompanied by a sword. ST ADALPRETUS, BISHOP OF TRENT, MARTYR - 27 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March WELCOME! SAINT ADALPRETUS, BISHOP OF TRENT, MARTYR The name Adalpretus is derived from the Old German pret, bert , meaning bright, shining .  Saint Adalpretus (Albertus, Adelpertus, [Adelpreto]), commemorated on March 27, was Bishop of Trent. He ascended to this episcopal see in 1160 or 1161 and received many privileges from Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, which enabled him to restore his diocese to its best. When, in 1181, he and his soldiers attempted to reclaim some church property that had been unlawfully confiscated, henchmen secretly pursued him, attacked from behind and pierced him with a lance. The villains inflicted this fatal injury on the holy bishop near Roveredo in Tyrol. Thus he is venerated as a martyr in Roveredo. SEBASTIAN COMES, MARTYR - 27 MARCH

SEBASTIAN COMES, MARTYR Sebastian (Sebastianus) Comes, commemorated on March 27, a martyr in Carthage, was killed for his Catholic faith during the reign of the Arian king Genseric. A certain martyrology printed in Liège in 1624 makes mention of him in this way:  In order to show the king that he was wrong in demanding a second baptism from him, he had white bread from the royal table placed before him and said: "Before this bread was placed before the king as food, the flour was carefully cleaned of the chaff and the whole thing was allowed to pass through water and fire. Thus I have passed through the mill and the sieve of the Catholic Church, purified with the baptismal water and made perfect with the fire of the Holy Spirit (confirmation). ST ELIAS, MARTYR OF BARDIABOCH - 27 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March WELCOME! SAINT ELIAS, MARTYR OF BARDIABOCH In A.D. 326, Saint Elias (commemorated on March 27), was inhumanly tortured and killed at Bardiaboch in Persia during the reign of King Sapor. With him were martyred Saints Zanitas , Lazarus, Maruthas [Marotas], Narses, Mares, Abibus, Sembeeth and Sabas. MARK OF BOLOGNA, RELIGIOUS - 27 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March WELCOME! MARK OF BOLOGNA, RELIGIOUS  Mark ( Marcus ) was a Franciscan from Bologna who some sources refer to as " blessed ". He died in 1479 after heroically overcoming many sufferings. Of good family, Mark further ennobled the privileges of his birth by a holy life, and often headed the entire Franciscan Order in Italy as Vicar General. During his active life he stayed at various monasteries, among them Aquila, Assisi and Naples.  In 1527 a transfer of his relics took place in Piacenza. The Hueb. Menol .* mentions that numerous miraculous healings are attributed to him. Nevertheless, his veneration has not been proven, which is why the Bollandists* mention Mark among their  Praetermissi . EUSTACE, RELIGIOUS Eustace (Eustachius) was a devout Cistercian monk and special devotee of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. After his death, the words "Ave Maria" are said to have appeared in the mouth of the dead man in shimmering gold letters in the presence of the abbot and his religious brethren. Bucelin * and Henriquez * list him as "Blessed Eustace" . ERNEST, COUNT AND RELIGIOUS - 27 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March VENERABLE ERNEST, COUNT AND RELIGIOUS Venerable Ernest ( Ernestus , Ernesto, Ernst) was a Count of Hohenstein and initially led a secular life. By the grace of God he was later converted and entered the monastery of Zwiefalten (Duplices Aquae) on the Danube in the Kingdom of Württemberg, where he died happily in the Lord. The time of his death cannot be specified. (Mart. MARIA MELISSER, VIRGIN - 27 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March MARIA MELISSER, VIRGIN Maria Melisser was a devout sister of the Third Order of  Saint Francis of Assisi  at Kisseleg in Swabia [Germany] (in the upper region of Württemberg [Oberland]).  With heroic patience she bore an illness which caused her body to turn gangrenous. Having suffered with it for seven years, she finally went to her eternal reward on May 20, 1625. After her death she was glorified by miracles. (Hub.) He was elected December 19, 1187; he died on March 27, 1191. During the short space (1181-1198) which separated the glorious pontificates of Alexander III and Innocent III, no less than five pontiffs occupied in rapid succession the papal chair.  They were all veterans trained in the school of Alexander, and needed only their earlier youthful vigour and length of reign to gain lasting renown in an age of great events. GREGORY XI., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Pierre Roger de Beaufort was born in 1331, at the castle of Maumont in the Dioceses of Limoges; he died March 27, 1378, at Rome.  He was a nephew of Pope Clement VI, who heaped numerous benefices upon him and finally created him cardinal deacon in 1348, when he was only eighteen years of age. As cardinal he attended the University of Perugia, became a skilled canonist and theologian, and gained the esteem of all by his humility and purity of heart.  After the death of Urban V, the cardinals unanimously elected him pope at Avignon, on December, 1370. He chose the name of Gregory XI, had himself ordained priest on January 4, 1371, and was crowned pope on the following day.  Immediately on his accession he attempted to reconcile the Kings of France and England, but failed. ANDRAGISINA, ABBESS - 27 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March ANDRAGISINA, ABBESS  Andragisina (Angadrisima) a virgin and abbess at Beauvais in France, was the daughter of Robert, who lived at the court of King Clotair.  SHE PRAYED TO BECOME UGLY IN APPEARANCE When her father wished her to marry a noble and upright man, named Ansbert , who later became Bishop of Rouen, she prayed to God to transform her beauty into a deformity (" rara feminis precatio " as our source puts it). God heard her prayer.  LIFE AT THE NUNNERY Then she entered the monastery at Beauvais. There she received the veil from St Audoënus, and later became the abbess. After her entry into the religious house she regained her former beauty, which now shone all the more brilliantly because it was the reflection of her spiritual beauty.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March WELCOME! BLESSED HAYMO, BISHOP OF HALBERSTADT  [Blessed] Haymo (Haimo) was a] Benedictine bishop of the ninth century; he died March 26, 853. The exact date and place of his birth are unknown.  When a youth, he entered the Order of  Saint Benedict   at Fulda [Germany], where the celebrated  Rabanus Maurus was one of his fellow-students. He went together with him to the Monastery of  St Martin at Tours to profit by the lessons of its great teacher, Alcuin .  OWING TO HIS GREAT LEARNING, HE WAS ALSO ENTRUSTED WITH TEACHING After a brief sojourn at Tours, both friends came back to the Benedictine house at Fulda, and spent there most of their life previous to their promotion to the episcopal dignity. The Roman Martyrology states:  "In Persia, in the reign of King Sapor, the holy martyrs Zanitas, Lazarus, Marotas, Narses, and five others , who merited the palm of martyrdom by being barbarously murdered."   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March WELCOME! BLESSED GIUSEPPE AMBROSOLI, SURGEON, PRIEST, AND MISSIONARY  Blessed Giuseppe Ambrosoli was born July 25, 1923 in, Como, Italy. He died on March 27, 1987. Comboni Missionary Fr Giuseppe Ambrosoli dedicated his life to helping the people of Kalongo, Uganda. On December 17, 2015 Pope Francis recognised the heroic virtues of Fr Giuseppe Ambrosoli, an Italian surgeon, priest and missionary. This is the first of several steps on the road to being named a saint. Saint John of Egypt was born about the year 305, was of a mean extraction, and brought up to the trade of a carpenter.  HE FORSOOK THE WORLD At twenty-five years of age he forsook the world, and put himself under the guidance and direction of an ancient holy anchoret, with such an extraordinary humility and simplicity as struck the venerable old man with admiration; who inured him to obedience by making him water a dry stick for a whole year, as if it were a live plant, and perform several other things as seemingly ridiculous, all which he executed with the utmost fidelity.  HUMILITY AND OBEDIENCE To the saint’s humility and ready obedience, Cassian attributes the extraordinary gifts he afterwards received from God.
