BLESSED RAINERIUS, RELIGIOUS - 26 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 26th of March BLESSED RAINERIUS, RELIGIOUS Blessed Rainerius, of Borgo di San Sepolcro, was a Capuchin priest. He died in A.D. 1586 at Todi in Umbria with such a reputation for piety that the process of his canonisation was initiated. His veneration was confirmed by Pope Pius VII . One day a bull, which he was about to drive into the stable, picked him up with his horns and threw him into the air, but Rainerius remained unharmed. This scene is often depicted. Blessed Rainerius is also commemorated on February 4. ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 26th of March SAINT MOCHELLUS ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Saint Mochellus (Mochellocus) was an Irish saint of whom nothing certain is known. He is also spelled Mottelogus, Motallegus, Metalochus, and Mohalon. Our Saint could perhaps be the same person as St Mochellocus. According to the Bollandists *, his place of residence was on the Ken Mare Bay, while older sources say he lived and worked in "Mormonia", i.e. anywhere in the south-west of the country. He may also have been known as Kellenus and have spent a large part of his life as a hermit. Kill-Mallok (Killocia) could have been the place where he was buried. According to others he was the founder of the spiritual settlement in County Limerick (Kelly, p. 87). It is improbable that he lived in the forest of Lethan, not far from Lismore, as some writers presume. A disciple of St Patrick (Patritius) , our saint probably worked in the town and area of Wicklow. There exists a church of his name (Killmantain). St Mantanus is also commemorated on March 2 and March 3. ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 26th of March JOHN IX., POPE ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index [He was pope from 898 to his death on March 26, 900.] He was a native of Tivoli, and the son of Rampoald. Becoming a Benedictine, he was ordained priest by Pope Formosus. At this period factions filled the city of Rome, and one of them tried to force their candidate, Sergius, afterwards Sergius III, on the papal throne in opposition to John. Perhaps because he was favoured by the ducal House of Spoleto, John was able to maintain his position, and Sergius was driven from the city and excommunicated. With a view to diminish the violence of faction in Rome, John, who is acknowledged to have been both intelligent and moderate, held several synods in Rome and elsewhere (898). In them the ghastly synod of Stephen (VI) VII was condemned, and its Acts were burnt. Re-ordinations were forbidden, and those of the clergy who had been degraded by Stephen were restore...

Dr Kelly in the Mart. Tamlact mentions a Lappan on March 26 and a Lappani Mic Ciarain on February 11. In the Mart. Doneg. there is a Lappan Cluana Aithghein on November 3, but without further additions. Ceraphus , (March 26), occurs in an Arab-Egyptian martyrology as a martyr in Persia. Kennannanus is mentioned on March 26 in the Irish Martyrology, and also counted among the "saints". Nothing else is known about him. David (March 26 or January 4) was Bishop of Bangor in England. He is counted by some among the Saints. Saint Bertilo , (March 26) was choir bishop and abbot of St Benigna near Dijon. He died around the year 878 and is invoked by fever patients. ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 26th of March HUGH, BISHOP OF LIMERICK Hugo [Hugh], surnamed de Lacii, Bishop of Limerick in Ireland, was of noble family of the county of Munster (Momonia) in Ireland. King Henry VIII (1509-1547) already threw him into prison because he could not win him over to his bad cause. PERSECUTIONS After he was released some time before Henry's death, he saw himself exposed to new persecutions under Edward VI. (1547-1553), which he escaped by fleeing to France. When Mary Stuart (1558-1587) subsequently came into power, he was reinstated in his diocese, which he administered with great enthusiasm. HIS HOLY DEATH But under Elizabeth (1558-1603) the 60-year-old old man was forcefully removed from his See because he was not compliant with her intentions. In holy baptism she received the name Beatrix. Her father was Johann Villani, Count of Polla; the mother's name was Portia di Costanzo. PENANCES From childhood onwards she demonstrated extraordinary holiness. Already at the age of five she practiced penances of every kind, especially flogging to the point of blood. She would have fled to live in the desert, if the vigilance of her household hadn't prevented her. A serious illness, from which she miraculously recovered, forced her to give it up. ALMSGIVING But as a nun of the Dominican Order she practiced the earlier works of penance with the usual severity, only with more plan and order. BLESSED MADDALENA MORANO, VIRGIN Maddalena Caterina Morano was born in Chieri, in the province of Turin, on the November 15, 1847. Maddalena wanted to teach, and when she was 17, she gained her teacher’s certificate. She began teaching at Montaldo Torinese. She did this with diligence and competence for fourteen years, earning the respect and esteem of the entire neighbourhood. Finally, Maddalena took her spiritual director’s advice and, after having bought a home for her mother with her savings, went to speak to Don Bosco, who directed her towards Mornese, where Mother Mazzarello happily welcomed her. She immediately began teaching. The Diocletian persecution had just broken out, and Pope Caius did not know where to lodge and hide all the faithful who, despite the persecution, were rushing in droves to the Church of Christ. Saint Braulio was the great assistant of Saint Isidore of Seville , in settling the discipline of the Church of Spain, and is one of those holy pastors to whose zeal, learning, and labours it has always professed itself much indebted. HIS WRITTEN WORKS He died in 646, in the twentieth year of his episcopacy. He has left us two letters to St Isidore, an eulogium of that saint, and a catalogue of his works: also a hymn in Iambic verse in honour of Saint Emilian , and the life of that servant of God, who after living long a hermit, was called to serve a parish in the diocese of Tarragon, where a famous monastery now bears his name. SAINT MARGARET CLITHEROW, MARTYR ⬅️ Forty Holy Martyrs of England and Wales Margaret Clitherow was born as Margaret Middleton. The daughter of a wax chandler, she married a butcher called John Clitherow when she was 15 years old in 1571. They had three children. When Margaret was 18 she converted to Catholicism, although her husband, while supportive of his wife, remained Protestant. SHE BECAME A FRIEND OF PERSECUTED CATHOLICS Margaret became a friend of persecuted Catholics in the north of England. Her son, Henry, trained at Reims [seminaries and Catholic churches were outlawed in England for several centuries] in order to become a Catholic priest and they regularly held [clandestine] Masses at her home in York.
