SAINT JACOB, PATRIARCH Joseph and Jacob reunited  Saint Jacob, Patriarch, is commemorated on December 19 and October 6.  In the year of the world 2168 (1836 BC), when the patriarch Isaac was 60 years old, his wife Rebekah bore him twins: Esau , who is also known as  Edom , from whom the Edomites or Idumeans descended. He was nicknamed Edom (which means red ) because of his reddish color and the equally reddish lentil porridge (mentioned in Genesis 25:30), and Jacob , who was later also called Israel , who is the immediate progenitor of the Israelite people. Even in the womb, the two brothers fought with each other, and when Rebekah inquired of the Lord about this, she received the answer that there were actually two peoples in her womb, and that the older would serve the younger (Genesis 25:22, 23). (El.) (Information from  Stadler 's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints,  Volume  1, Augsburg, 1858, p. 464) Stadler's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints - Sources and Abbreviations Bernard of Toledo was Archbishop of Toledo, born at Agen (73 m. s.e. of Bordeaux), France, c. 1050; died in Spain 1125. He became a monk in the monastery of Cluny, whence he was sent to Spain with others to assist the cause of the reforms of Gregory VII . Here he was made (1080) abbot of St Facundus at Sahagun in the diocese of Leon, and finally named by Alfonso VI for the archbishopric of Toledo.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 19th of December WELCOME! SAINT THOMAS DE, MARTYR Thomas De, a [Vietnamese] tailor, martyr [and Dominican Tertiary], was killed on December 19, 1839 by beheading. His fellow martyrs were: Stephen Vinh , Dominic By and Frances Xavier Man; the latter two had worked as catechists for the mission. SAINT GREGORY, BISHOP OF AUXERRE - 19 DECEMBER

SAINT GREGORY, BISHOP OF AUXERRE In the early 6th century, Saint Gregory, the 10th bishop of Auxerre (Antisiodorum), ruled his church for twelve years. His successor was Saint Optatus . According to handwritten notes about the bishops of Auxerre, which were available to the Bollandist Sollier , Saint Gregory died on May 29. The Roman Martyrology * lists him on December 19. We could not find his name in Butler's works . (Mg.)   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 19th of December WELCOME!   SAINT SAMTHANA, VIRGIN, ABBESS IN IRELAND Saint Samthana [Samantha, Samthann] founded the monastery of Cluain Bronach, on the borders of Meath in Ireland. She was in charge of this monastery until she departed to our Lord in 738.  Information from Fr Butler's Lives of the Saints PRAYER: May the intercession of blessed Samthana commend us to you, so that through her merits we may obtain that which we cannot accomplish by our own. BLESSED URBAN V., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Guillaume de Grimoard, born at Grisac in Languedoc, 1310; died at Avignon, December 19, 1370.  Born of a knightly family, he was educated at Montpellier and Toulouse, and became a Benedictine monk at the little priory of Chirac near his home.  A Bull of 1363 informs us that he was professed at the great Abbey of St Victor at Marseilles, where he imbibed his characteristic love for the Order of St Benedict; even as pope he wore its habit. He was ordained at Chirac, and after a further course of theology and canon law at the universities of Toulouse, Montpellier, Paris, and Avignon, he received the doctorate in 1342.  HE WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST CANONISTS OF HIS DAY He was one of the greatest canonists of his day; was professor of canon law at Montpellier, and also taught at Toulouse, Paris, and Avignon; he acted successively as vicar-gen...
