SAINT URSUS, CONFESSOR This holy priest is venerated in Aosta ( Augusta Praetoria ) in Northern Italy - where his relics rest in the cathedral - though some martyrologies erroneously style him "Bishop." No documentary evidence concerning him exists, yet his veneration dates back to time immemorial. Tradition in Aosta holds that he was a Scot by birth and, by vocation, a pious and zealous priest at the Church of St Peter, serving as a disciple of the holy Bishop Gratus . He distinguished himself before the world through great humility, mercy, gentleness, and a peace-loving nature. To avoid burdening anyone, he supported himself through manual labour, while at night he would visit the churches, whose doors opened to him of their own accord. SAINT PIGMENIUS, BISHOP Saint Pigmenius (Pimenius), commemorated on February 2, was a confessor whose relics were venerated in the monastery of Casalegas . Most probably he held the office of bishop, since a diocese subordinate to the archdiocese of Merida (Emerita) was established in his honour by King Wamba in Talavera in 676. Further details cannot be established with certainty. Most writers therefore identified him as a separate Saint, while Cardoso* reckons him to be Bishop Pimenius, who was present at the Council of Toledo in 638. His veneration in Spain is, in any case, established. It was confirmed by the Twelfth Council of Toledo. (I. 267 app. 942). (Adalbert, Adalbard) (d. 652) was the son of Gerberga, daughter of the magister militum Richomer and  Gertrude of Hamage (d. 649), who founded a nunnery at Wandignies-Hamage near Douai. He was influenced by  Saint Amandus . According to Alban Butler , Adalbald had two brothers, Sigefrid, count of Ponthieu, and Archenald, Mayor of the Palace to Clovis II, son of Dagobert , to whom they were related. His relationship with Merovingian King Dagobert has been proposed to have been through his mother Gerberga, and her sister Bertrude (or perhaps Haldetrude, Clothar's first wife).  Adalbald was a leading noble and claimed lordship of Douai.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 2nd of February WELCOME! ALFRED DELP, PRIEST Alfred Delp was born in Mannheim, Germany, to a Catholic mother and a Protestant father. Although baptised Catholic, he was raised and confirmed a Lutheran. At the age of 14 he left the Lutheran church and received the sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation as a Catholic. In his later life Delp was a fervent promoter of better relations between the churches. Fr Delp joined the Jesuits in 1926. In the next 10 years he continued his studies and worked with German youth, made more difficult after 1933 with the interference of the Nazi regime. Fr Delp was ordained in 1937. He also worked on the editorial staff of the Jesuit publication Stimmen der Zeit (Voices of the Times), until it was suppressed in 1941. VENERABLE FRANCIS MARY PAUL LIBERMAN, PRIEST Francis Mary Paul Libermann   This holy Priest was the founder of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was afterwards merged in the Congregation of the Holy Ghost. The son of a Jewish rabbi, he was born at Severne in Alsace, April 12, 1804; he died at Paris, February 2, 1852. He received the name of Jacob at his circumcision, and was the third youngest of seven children whom his mother Lia Suzanna Haller, bore to his father, Lazarus Libermann. He was brought up according to the sternly strict tenets of the Talmud, and his mind was early imbued with a special horror of the "Goim" , or Christians.  He lost his mother when he was nine years old; and this, together with the harsh treatment he received from his schoolmaster, caused his boyhood to pass in much bitterness. STEFANO BELLESINI, RELIGIOUS In 1840, Stefano (Stephanus) Bellesini, of the Augustinian Order, died in the odour of sanctity in Gennazzano (Tyrol). He was initially conventual in the Saint Maurus monastery in Trent. In this city he was born on November 25, 1774. His father was a notary; his pious mother directed his upbringing. In 1790 he entered the Order and immediately came to Bologna, where he remained until 1797. Soon afterwards he became a priest. He now redoubled his zeal for the salvation of souls, which increased in proportion as he himself strived for holiness.  In 1809 his monastery was closed; he and three other priests were allowed to stay for the time being. When this privilege was withdrawn, he set up a school for the poor, which almost exceeded his strength, especially since he gave out large amounts of alms, and deceitful beggars often abused his kindness. M.M.)  In Rome, Saints Fortunatus, Felician ( Felicianus ) , Firmus, Candidus, Castula, Secundula, Rogatian ( Rogatianus ), Cajus, Gregory ( Gregorius ), Cappa, Felicity ( Felicitas ), Placidus, Victor, Felix, Martialis, Cornelianus, Salustius, Maurice ( Mauricius ), Papyrius, Secundianus, Ingenuus, Mustula, Victoria, Bonosia, another Victoria, Hilary ( Hilarus ), Rogatus, and Saturnin ( Saturninus ) were cruelly killed for the sake of the Christian faith. On February 2, the four saints listed right at the top (in bold) are also mentioned in the Roman Martyrology *.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 2nd of February SAINT ERLULPH, BISHOP OF VERDEN, MARTYR The origins of Saint Erlulph ( Erluphus , Erlulfus ), commemorated on February 2 or February 10, are not quite certain. A few sources claim he was an Englishman, some think his ancestry was from Scotland, and yet others affirm that he had been an Irish abbot. What we know for certain is that he was Bishop of Verden and was martyred by the Normans at Eppeckstoep (Ebbeckesdorp, Ebstorp, Expokstorp) in Lower Saxony (Lüneburg) some time between the years 831 and 847. Butler * lists his name  on February 10, and states that he was martyred with the rest of his companions in the year 880 . He died in the year 959. Saint Columban of St Bavo is also commemorated on February 13 and February 15.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 2nd of February SAINT HILWART, MARTYR Hilwart (Hilwartus) , also called Ailwart, Heilward, and Aeluaritus , died around the year 880 in the battle of the German King Louis the Younger against the pagan Normans. (Thus the Annales Fuldenses *). Since the war was waged for the sake of faith, the fallen were given the honour of martyrs. Their memory was especially celebrated at the monastery of the Benedictine nuns in Ebstorf in Hanover, where according to Bruzen *, they are said to have been buried. Saint Hilwart was a companion of Saint Theodoricus.  This holy martyr is also commemorated on August 1. CLEMENT XIII., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Carlo della Torre Rezzonico was born at Venice, March 7, 1693; he died at Rome, February 2, 1769.  He was educated by the Jesuits at Bologna, took his degrees in law at Padua, and in 1716 was ppointed at Rome referendary of the two departments known as the "Signatura Justitiæ" and the "Signatura Gratiæ". He was made governor of Rieti in 1716, of Fano in 1721, and Auditor of the Rota for Venice in 1725.  In 1737 he was made cardinal-deacon, and in 1743 Bishop of Padua, where he distinguished himself by his zeal for the formation and sanctification of his clergy, to promote which he held a synod in 1746, and published a very remarkable pastoral on the priestly state.  His personal life was in keeping with his teaching, and the Jansenist Abbé Clément, a grudging witness, tells us that "he was called the saint (by his people), and was ...
