SAINT MAXIMUS, BISHOP OF MAINZ - 18 NOVEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER Saints celebrated on the 18th of November SAINT MAXIMUS, BISHOP OF MAINZ Of Saint Maximus, bishop of Mainz, we have little reliable information. According to some he lived towards the end of the fourth century, others maintain that he flourished at the beginning of the fifth age. In any case, it was not him, but St Maximin of Trier who presided over the Council of Cologne in 346, because at the time in question the See of Mainz was headed by Bishop Martin. St Maximus had much to suffer in his time. The Roman Martyrology* confirms this fact. He possessed many talents and great learning, which were surpassed only by his zeal and piety.  As is generally assumed, he was born in Mainz. According to the Proprium of the Mainz Diocese, Maximus was ordained by St Adelhard and remained a faithful servant of the Church under both his leadership and that of his successor Lucius Annaeus. Maximus continued to preach the orthodox faith throughout the vario...

MANDETUS, HERMIT - 18 NOVEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER Saints celebrated on the 18th of November MANDETUS, HERMIT During the 7th century, this holy religious and hermit lived on an island off the coast of Brittany. Nothing has survived about him apart from his name (French Mandé).  His relics, which were originally kept at St Etienne des Bourges and afterwards moved to a church near Paris dedicated to him, are also no longer extant. A parish in the diocese of La Rochelle bears his name - at that place there are still traces of his former activity, which perhaps, with continued investigation, will bring to light further details of his life. SAINT THOMAS SALUS, MONK - 18 NOVEMBER

SAINT THOMAS SALUS, MONK Saint Thomas Salus, a monk in Celesyria, once came to Antioch in Syria to get alms for his monastery. Anastasius, who was in charge of provisions and supplies, slapped him on the cheek, which annoyed those present. But St Thomas prophesied calmly, "I will ask no more of him, and he will give no more."  So it was. Anastasius died the following day, and on his way home, Thomas was summoned to immortal life at Daphne's infirmary. His body was initially buried in the pilgrim burial ground, but later transferred to the city of Antioch, because a number of miracles had occurred at his grave.  (St Thomas is also commemorated on May 24.)  (Information from Stadler's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints, Volume 5, Augsburg, 1882) Stadler's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints - Sources and Abbreviations PRAYER: Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Saint Thomas may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. BLESSED ODO OF CLAIRVAUX - 18 NOVEMBER

He shone through exceptional gentleness and other virtues.  Most sources refer to him as a "Blessed" (Menardus, Bucelin, and others); Saussayus lists him among the "Saints".  It is specifically related of Odo (in Chalemot) that during the celebration of the Holy Mass he was often ecstatic and appreciated seeing the dear Saviour face to face. Nevertheless, before he died, fell into great fear that he might not stand up in the judgement of God. St Bernhard himself kept the dying man company during his last agony. Odo's grave was held in high esteem by his brothers. Some calendars mention him on February 17.
