ST ADELAIDE, WIDOW - 8 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 8th of January WELCOME! SAINT ADELAIDE, WIDOW The name Adelaide ( Adelheidis , Adelheid) is derived from the Old German, meaning: a noble person, noble-born, one who guards her nobility. Saint Adelaide ( Adelheidis , Adelais [ Adela ]) was the wife of Count Baldwin IV of Flanders, nicknamed " the Pious ". He went to his eternal reward in 1067. Having become a widow, Saint Adelaide set out on a journey to Rome and there received the veil from the hands of Pope Alexander II . However, she soon returned to her homeland and brought with her some of the relics of Saint Sidronius , which she gifted to the Benedictine monastery she had founded in Meessene (two hours from Ypres). Here in this monastery she died with a reputation for holiness and is venerated there on January 8. Legend has it that he saw in a vision how Saints Denis , Maurice , and Martin defended the soul of the Gaulish King Dagobert against demonic forces. This supernatural event is also mentioned in the Life of Bishop Dado of Rouen (August 24) to whom this apparition and the written summary of it was mistakenly attributed to. PAULINUS, BISHOP OF TIBURNIA - 8 JANUARY

PAULINUS, BISHOP OF TIBURNIA Paulinus, a bishop at St. Veit (Tiburnia) in Carinthia, is mentioned in the life of Saint Severin. Raderus also remembers him and calls him blessed. The Bollandists* list him among the Praetermissi . Weissbacher (III. 229) relates that Paulinus was born in Bavaria, and came to visit Saint Severin who sent him back to his homeland, appointing him bishop of Tiburnia , by which some understand Regensburg . Severin, on the same occasion, predicted the incursions of the Alemanni. Paulinus thereupon prescribed a three-day fast and prayer in all places in his diocese in order to ward off the evil. The places where his decree was followed were spared, but the others were devastated by the Alemanni. This pious bishop flourished around the year 476 (I. 458 and Weissb. III. 229). (1693) Cunegundes (Kunigundis, Gunegundis, Kunigunde), a niece (sister's daughter) of bishop Saint Ulrich of Augsburg , is mentioned in the life of bishop Saint Erhard of Ratisbon [Regensburg] on January 8 (I. 538. no. 3). An excellent pious nun at the Niedermünster monastery in Regensburg, she was a contemporary of Saint Wolfgang . As overseer of church affairs (sacristan) she miraculously received an order from a speaking Crucifix. Cunegundes was thus instructed to tidy up the tomb of bishop Saint Erhard, from which a linen cloth stuck out, because some servants who swept the church did not treat the prelate's burial place with due respect by daring to tear off bits of this linen cloth. He spent the first part of his life in the deserts of the East; but inflamed with an ardent zeal for the glory of God, he left his retreat to preach the gospel in the North. CELESTINE III., POPE ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Giacinto Bobone was the first of the Roman Orsini to ascend the Chair of Peter. He was born about 1106; he died at Rome, January 8, 1198. He was forty-seven years a cardinal when, in his eighty-fifth year, he was elected (March 30, 1191) successor of Clement III; being only a deacon he was ordained priest (April 13) and consecrated bishop the next day, respectively Holy Saturday and Easter. The following day he anointed and crowned King Henry VI of Germany as emperor, and as empress his queen Constantia. The king was then on his way to Southern Italy to enforce against Tancred the claims of Constantia to the crown of the two Sicilies. SAINT PATIENS, BISHOP OF METZ In the documents at Metz it is claimed the following - which seems somewhat incompatible with his Latin name - that Patiens came from a distinguished Greek family in Asia Minor. When the Evangelist St John proclaimed the Gospel there, St Patiens joined him. EVENTS IN ASIA MINOR St John - so it says - had it divinely revealed to him that the episcopal see at Metz had become vacant following the recent death of St Felix. According to the legend St John then sent this loyal and dear disciple to Gaul, and when he parted, gave him a tooth that he pulled out of his own mouth without any pain as a pledge of love with the words: "Take this souvenir from me and leave it in the place that the Lord has will show you; the rest of my limbs are in the hands of my Creator, who has protected me in every tribulation up to now." SAINT VULSIN, BISHOP OF SHIREBURN, CONFESSOR William of Malmesbury informs us, that Saint Dunstan, when bishop of London, appointed Saint Vulsin abbot of twelve monks at Thorney, since called Westminster, where St Mellitus had built a church in honour of St Peter. ABBOT OF TWELVE MONKS St Vulsin was afterwards chosen bishop of Shireburn; his holy life was crowned with a happy death in 973. SAINT PEGA, VIRGIN Saint Pega was sister to Saint Guthlack (Guthlake, Guthlac) , the famous hermit of Croyland, and though of the royal blood of the Mercian kings, forsook the world, and led an austere retired life in the country which afterwards bore her name, in Northamptonshire, at a distance from her holy brother. SHE DIED IN ROME Some time after his death she went to Rome, and there slept in the Lord, about the year 719. Ordericus Vitalis says, her relics were honoured with miracles, and kept in a church which bore her name at Rome; but this church is not now known. PEAGKIRK From one in Northamptonshire, a village still retains the name of Peagkirk, vulgarly Pequirk; she was also titular saint of a church and monastery in Pegeland, which St Edward the Confessor united to Croyland. Elsewhere, he is also commemorated on January 6 or January 28. HUMBLE BEGINNINGS St Petrus Thomas was born in Perigord, France, in 1305 to parents so poor that they were unable even to support him and his only sister. Both had to meet their daily needs by begging. All the more, the boy driven to learn something useful, and he soon got so far that he could earn his living by teaching younger boys. From there he came to Agen, where he studied grammar, logic, and dialectics. In his twentieth year the local Carmelite prior sent him to Lectour in Gascony to teach grammar and logic to the youngsters there. He laboured in the mission field in Noricum (the Danube area, including South Germany and Austria). A MAN OF FAITH AND ACTION He was a powerful figure, a man of faith and action. Time and again he left his beloved monastery to help the poor population of Noricum, who suffered a lot from the storms of the Great Migration which took place all over Europe at the time. HIS AMAZING SERMONS The sermons which this apostolic man delivered to the people produced the most amazing effects. Those who heard him were filled with vigorous disgust for sin and were drawn to serve God with great fervour. ST THORFINN OF HAMAR, BISHOP - 8 JANUARY

SAINT THORFINN OF HAMAR, BISHOP Saint Thorfinn, a Cistercian monk, and Bishop of Hamar, Norway, was born in Trondheim. STATE INTERFERENCE IN CHURCH MATTERS From A.D. 1282 onwards, King Eric II tried to control Church matters (such as the elections of bishops and who was in charge of Church affairs) and used force to get his way. A prolonged persecution of the Church by the secular state followed. Bishop Thorfinn had to go into exile. He found refuge in the abbey of Ter Doest, near Bruges, Belgium. He died in the odour of sanctity on January 8, 1285. ST THORFINN'S VITA The Flemish monk Walter de Muda wrote a short "Life" of St Thorfinn in verse, which is the source of almost all information we have about him.
