  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 11th August WELCOME! PLECTRUDIS, WIDOW Plectrudis ( Plicthrudis, Pleihtrut ), daughter of Duke Grimoald of Bavaria, was the first and lawful wife of the Frankish majordomo [Mayor of the Palace] Pepin of Heristal. When he divorced her to marry his concubine Albiz (Algais),  Saint Lambert of Liège became a martyr for the sanctity and unity of marriage. After her husband's death in 714, she briefly continued his office and held her stepson Charles Martel prisoner. However, he managed to escape from imprisonment and assume his father's dignity, whereupon Plectrudis settled permanently at Saint Mary's of the Capitol (St. Maria vom Capitol) in Cologne, which church she built and endowed. She is also (Rettb. I. 306) the founder of the Süsteren monastery in the Meusegau (anno 711) and probably also of  Andoin in the Ardennes. BLESSED JOHN SANDYS, PRIEST AND MARTYR The Manner of Execution at Tyburn   John Sandys was born in the diocese of Chester, was educated in Douay college during its residence at Rheims, where he was made priest, and sent upon the English mission, anno 1584. After having, for some time, diligently applied himself to his missionary functions, he was apprehended, tried and condemned for being a priest; and was drawn, hanged, bowelled and quartered at Gloucester, August the 11th, (some say the 2nd) 1586. In October following, I find three priests executed together at Tyburn; of whom thus writes Mr Stow in his Chronicle . "The 8th of October:  Mr Lowe ,  J. Adams , and R. Dibdale , being before condemned for treason in being made priests by authority of the bishop of Rome, were drawn to Tyburn, and there hanged, bowelled and quartered." After he had walked barefoot on burning coals and confessed Christ with increased constancy, he was put to the  sword." SAINT SUSANNA OF ROME, VIRGIN AND MARTYR   Saint Susanna was nobly born in Rome, and is said to have been niece to  Pope Caius . Having made a vow of virginity, she refused to marry; on which account she was impeached as a Christian, and suffered with heroic constancy a cruel martyrdom.  SHE SUFFERED WITH HEROIC CONSTANCY No genuine acts of her life are now extant; but she is commemorated in many ancient Martyrologies. Directed by Saint Francis , she founded the Contemplative Order of the Claritians at the Monastery of Saint Damian , in Assisi, where she died in 1253. In 1958  Pope Pius XII proclaimed her the Heavenly Patron Saint of Television.  PRAYER: God of mercy, you inspired Saint Clare with the love of poverty. By the help of her prayers may we follow Christ in poverty of spirit and come to the joyful vision of your glory in the kingdom of heaven. And certainly, I think, this is true of our own time and our own need.
