According to legend, this bishop of Capua was born in England. On a pilgrimage to the Holy Land he stopped over in Capua, just as the episcopal throne happened to be vacant. In order not to oppose the divine will, he took over the post of chief pastor assigned to him.  By his example, and especially by his ardent love, he turned sinners from vices and encouraged the righteous to strive for Christian perfection. For three full years he had an opportunity to exercise his patience, since during this time the schismatics persecuted him severely. Paulinus, however, countered their hatred with love and their insults with benevolence.  During the same period there raged a great famine in Capua, and the holy bishop excelled in abundant charity. The Roman Martyrology states:  " At Nicomedia, the holy martyrs Eulampius, and his sister, the virgin Eulampia, who, hearing that her brother was tortured for Christ, rushed through the crowd, embraced him and became his companion. Both were cast into a caldron of boiling oil, but being quite uninjured, they terminated their martyrdom by decapitation with two hundred others, who, impressed by the miracle, had believed in Christ." He was, moreover, distinguished by prudence and wisdom. He died probably towards the end of the 5th century, and is also mentioned in the Roman Martyrology* on this day. He died at that city about the year 450, and was buried there.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 10th of October HUGH, BISHOP OF AUXERRE Hugh (Hugo), of Macon (Matisconensis), [ Hugues de Mâcon], bi shop of Auxerre, died about the year 1151 at Pontigny. Migne * lists him among the "blessed," as does Henriquez *. Bucelin * calls him "saint", but Saussayus * calls him "pious," since he never enjoyed public veneration. Hugh is also remembered on January 21. ROBERT MALATESTA, FRANCISCAN This blessed Robert, according to the anonymous description of his life, came from the noble family of Malatesta.  From childhood he gave signs of his future piety. Scarcely five years old he occupied himself with contemplating death. When asked by his uncle Carl what he would most like to be once he had grown up, the boy answered: "I want to die poor!" Surprised at this and thinking that the boy had only said this out of simplicity, the uncle asked the same question twice more - only to receive the same answer.  Already in his tenth year the blessed used a belt of penance, scourges and strict fasting in an effort of  combatting awakening greed. SAINT GEREON AND OTHERS, MARTYRS  Cloth of the Saint Gereon tapestry made about A.D. 1000 Saint Gereon Saint Gereon and others were 3rd century Roman Martyrs. These heroic Christians, three hundred and nineteen in number, appear to have formed part of the famous Theban Legion, massacred by order of the Emperor Maximian (A.D. 286). St Gereon would therefore be the officer in command of the detachment.
