SAINT SULPITIUS, BISHOP OF BAYEUX According to the Gallia Christiana *, Sulpitius was the 20th in the line of succession of the bishops of Bayeux. He ruled this diocese around the middle of the 9th century and met his death at the cruel hands of the Normans.  After their departure, his body was found under the ruins of the monastery of Val-Sainte ( Vallis sancta , Heiligenthal ). It was later said that his relics were transferred to St Ghislain. In this case he would be identical with S. Sulpitius Baionensis .   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of September SAINT BABYLAS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS According to the Greek Meneae *, a certain Saint Babylas (commemorated on September 4), who was a bishop of Antioch in Syria, was martyred with 84 boys, who were his pupils. They suffered in the area of Nicomedia during the reign of Emperor Maximinian. However, according to Baronius *, with whom the Bollandists * agree, this holy martyr is identical with this Saint Babylas  (January 24).   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of September GILBERT OF FONTENELLE, ABBOT According to Mabillon* Gilbert became abbot of Fontenelle in 1062 (according to Bucelin* 1063). He was highly educated, led a life rich in merit, active in monastic discipline, promoted the liturgical chant etc. According to an epitaph communicated by the same source, Gilbert was born in Mainz [Germany] and was of noble origin. His death took place on September 4, 1089.  According to Butler*, where Gilbert is called "Saint Gilbert" he was the 30th abbot of Fontenelle, descended from a respected family in Germany, and left his fatherland with the monk Maurilius von Fecamp, who later became Archbishop of Rouen.  Bucelin* lists Gilbert on February 8, and states that he was initially a hermit, then became a monk at Fontenelle, and remained in constant contact with the holy Archbishop Maurilius of Rouen.  With Lechner* he appears under the name Gerbert and is called...

BLESSED NICOLO RUSCA, PRIEST AND MARTYR  Blessed Nicolo Rusca was born in Bedano, Switzerland, on April 20, 1563 to a family that belong to an ancient and noble house, the House of Rusconi.  HE PREACHED THE CATHOLIC FAITH  Bl. Nicolo was ordained to the priesthood in 1587 and at the end of his time of study, he was appointed as the Archpriest of Sondrio. This was an appointment he was kept in until his death. He also exerted himself to  to promote the teachings and decisions of the Council of Trent and also tried to cope with the rise of Protestantism in parts of Europe.  HE WAS MARTYRED BY TORTURE Bl. Nicolo was briefly arrested in 1608 and acquitted of breaching rules in relation to respect of religious tolerance.
