They were a very disparate group of people – many were priests executed for saying Mass, others laity who helped them, or simply refused to deny their faith under persecution. They came from all classes of society, rich and poor, educated and unlettered; but they were alike in placing their faith above any material advantage, and indeed valuing it more than life itself.
