BL. THOMAS ALFIELD, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 6 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 6th of July WELCOME! BLESSED THOMAS ALFIELD, PRIEST AND MARTYR Thomas Alfield, or Aufield, as some call him, was born in Gloucestershire, studied his divinity in the English college then residing in Rheims, where he was made priest in 1581; and so went upon the English mission, where I find him a prisoner in April, 1582.  In the latter end of the year 1583, or the beginning of 1584, there came out a book, penned, as it was supposed, by Cecil, lord treasurer, entitled, The Execution of Justice, &c. , or Justitia Britannica . The drift of this book was to persuade the world, that the Catholics, who had suffered in England since the queen's ascension to the crown, had not suffered for religion, but for treason. The book was immediately answered by Dr Allen, and the author fairly convicted of notorious untruths; but people in power will not bear to be told they lie.  Mr Alfield, therefore, who had found means to imp...

SAINT ERMIAS, MARTYR - 6 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 6th of July SAINT ERMIAS, MARTYR Saint Ermias lived in Apollonia in a cave to serve God there. His companions in this solitude were called Felix and Peregrin. When  Isaurus and his fellows came to Apollonia from Athens, they went by higher intuition to that cave. There they met these zealous Christians. Delighted at these Christian strangers, the pious men severed ties with the world entirely by giving everything they owned to the poor, money, estate, and the like.  Their relatives, however, were incensed about this and therefore reported them for being Christians. Thereupon the city prefect had them seized and beheaded. Isaurus and his companions were thrown into the fire first, and as they emerged from it unharmed, they were also decapitated. This happened at the beginning of the fourth century. (Information from  Stadler 's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints,  Volume  2, Augsburg, 1861, p. 85) Stadle...

ST GODOLIVA, MARTYR - 6 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 6th of July WELCOME! SAINT GODOLIVA  An uncommon example of Christian patience is presented to us by the Church today in  Saint Godoliva [Godelieve], whose life ought to be particularly considered by all women who fall to the lot of wicked men.  She was a native of France, and the daughter of rich and noble parents who neglected nothing to give her an education in accordance with her station in life. She united with most exquisite beauty, great virtue and piety, and hence was early sought in marriage by many young men of the nobility.  Among these, a certain Bertulph of the Netherlands, who seemed her equal in rank, gained her parents' consent, and Godoliva submitted to their will. Having received a dower according to her station in life, she went, accompanied by some of her relatives, to the Netherlands, where her marriage was to take place. But how surprising an evidence of the inconstancy of human love...

ST PALLADIUS, BISHOP - 6 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 6th of July WELCOME! SAINT PALLADIUS, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR The name of Palladius shows this saint to have been a Roman, and most authors agree that he was deacon of the church of Rome. At least St Prosper in his chronicle informs us, that when Agricola, a noted Pelagian, had corrupted the churches of Britain with the insinuation of that pestilential heresy, Pope Celestine, at the instance of Palladius the deacon, in 429, sent thither St Germanus, bishop of Auxerre, in quality of his legate, who having ejected the heretics, brought back the Britons to the Catholic faith.  POPE CELESTINE SENT PALLADIUS The concern of Palladius for these islands stopped not here; for it seems not to be doubted, but it was the same person of whom St Prosper again speaks, when he afterwards says, that in 431 Pope Celestine sent Palladius, the first bishop to the Scots then believing in Christ.  From the lives of SS. Albeus, Declan, Ibar, and Ki...
