EPIMACHUS AND ALEXANDER, MARTYRS Whilst the persecution set on foot by Decius raged with the utmost violence at Alexandria in 250, and the magistrates were very industrious and active in searching for Christians, Alexander and Epimachus fell into their hands, and upon confessing the name of Jesus Christ, were loaded with chains, committed to prison, and suffered all the hardships of a long and rigorous confinement. Remaining the same after this severe trial of their faith and patience, they were beaten with clubs, their sides were torn with iron hooks, and they consummated their martyrdom by fire.  THEY CONSUMMATED THEIR MARTYRDOM BY FIRE St Dionysius, archbishop of that city, and an eyewitness of some part of their sufferings, gives this short account of their sufferings, and also makes mention of four martyrs of the other sex, who were crowned on the same day, and at the same place....

SAINT CALLISTUS II., POPE ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Saint Callistus' [Callixtus] date of birth is unknown; he died on December 13, 1124. His reign, beginning February 1, 1119, is signalised by the termination of the Investiture controversy which, begun in the time of Gregory VII, had raged with almost unabated bitterness during the last quarter of the eleventh century and the opening years of the twelfth.  Guido, as he was called before his elevation to the papacy, was the son of Count William of Burgundy, and both by his father’s and mother’s side was closely connected with nearly all the royal houses of Europe. His brother Hugh had been appointed Archbishop of Besancon, and he himself was named Archbishop of Vienne (1088), and afterwards appointed papal legate in France by Paschal II. SAINT COLUMBA OF TERRYGLASS, ABBOT Saint Columba was a son of Crinthainn and a disciple of St Finnian of Clonard. When the latter was in extremis, from the plague, Columba administered Holy Viaticum. Having completed his studies, he took charge of Caemban, Fintan, and Mocumin, who are numbered among the saints.  HE FOUNDED THE MONASTERY OF TERRYGLASS He founded the celebrated monastery of Tirdaglas, or Terryglass, 548.  It is said that he visited Tours and brought thence relics of St Martin .  He died of the plague, December 13, 552, and was buried within the precincts of his own monastery at Terryglass. BLESSED CONRAD OF OFFIDA, PRIEST AND RELIGIOUS Blessed Conrad of Offida was a Friar Minor, born at Offida, a little town in the March of Ancona, c. 1241; died at Bastia in Umbria, December 12, 1306. When barely fourteen years old he entered the Order of Friars Minor at Ascoli, and was making rapid progress in the study of sacred sciences, when an internal voice called him to humbler offices of the religious life.  HE FELT CALLED TO HUMBLER OFFICES He therefore abandoned his studies with the consent of his superiors, and for many years was employed as cook.  His superiors subsequently had him ordained and sent him forth to preach.
