SAINT HERIBALD, BISHOP OF AUXERRE  From time immemorial Heribald (Heribaldus, Heriboldus) (April 25) has been venerated in Auxerre (Antissiodorum). The crypt of  St Germain there contains a short inscription outlining his life story: "Here lies the body of St Heribaldus, who was first abbot of this house, then bishop of Auxerre." As such he was the successor of St Angelelmus . The splendour of Heribald's virtues, which had previously remained hidden in the monastic cell - as a Gallican martyrology relates - shone in full view from now on and cast its rays throughout Gaul, attracting not only the love but also the admiration of the greatest men of the time. Because of the favour he enjoyed with King Charles the Bald, he also acquired many temporal advantages for his diocese. SAINT MARK THE EVANGELIST Mark the Evangelist is traditionally thought to be the interpreter of the Apostle Peter, who went on to write the Gospel of Mark, founded the Church of Africa and became Bishop of Alexandria. According to the New Testament theologian William Lane an ‘unbroken tradition’ identifies Mark the Evangelist with John Mark and John Mark as the cousin of Barnabas. This identification means that Mark is identified as the man who carried water to the house where the Last Supper took place or the man who ran away naked when Jesus was arrested. In the first year of Herod Agrippa’s reign over Judaea (A.D. 41) the king killed James, son of Zebedee, and arrested Peter, planning to kill him after Passover. Peter was saved miraculously by angels and escaped (Acts 12:1-19). Peter travelled to Antioch, then through Asia Minor and arrived in Rome in the second year of Emperor Claudius’s reign. At ...

(1693) While he was collecting alms in Wetzlar (some sources say, between Amöneburg and Giessen) in 1560, the Franciscan Melchior Mayer was set upon by Lutheran students and (according to the Seraphic Martyrology *) tortured by them until he gave up his ghost. The Roman Martyrology states:  "In the same city [Antioch], the Saints Philo and Agathopodes, deacons."   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 25th of April SAINT ERMIN OF LOBBES, BISHOP AND ABBOT Saint Ermin (Erminus) was born at Laon, a town in Picardy, about the middle of the 7th century. In terms of status and rank, his parents belonged to the middle class, but they nonetheless noticed the boy's pious spirit and beautiful spiritual gifts, and therefore devoted him to the study of the sacred sciences.  In these he made brilliant progress, but no less so in all virtues, which is why Bishop Madelgarius ordained him a priest. The reputation of his holy life spread everywhere and St Ursmarus, bishop and abbot of Lebbe or Lobes (Laubacum), (in what is now the Belgian province of Hainault), sought his holy friendship. Ermin then shared with him in his apostolic work, later became his successor. He worked with great blessings as bishop and abbot until his old age. God especially bestowed on him the gift of prophecy. He died blessed in the Lord on April 25, 737. H...

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 25th of April BLESSED JAMES OF TREVISO, PRIEST AND RELIGIOUS Blessed James of Treviso (Jacobus Tarvisinus) , a priest of the Franciscan Order from Treviso (Tarvisium) near Venice, died on September 20, 1225 at Magdeburg (Parthenopolis). Blessed James is listed in Hub. Men .*, as well as in Art. Mart .*,  but not in the Franciscan Roman Martyrology *. On April 25, 1239 a translation of his relics took place.  The Bollandists * bring him up again in the appendix to September 20 (VIII. 783) , but they note that nothing has yet been found regarding his church veneration, and that Wadding does not give him the title "blessed". SAINT IVES, BISHOP   [Saint Ivo, Yves, Ivia of Slepe, Huntingdonshire.] He was a Persian bishop, who preached the faith in England about the same time with St Augustine, in the seventh century; and having for some time prepared himself for his last passage, by solitude, watching, prayer, and fasting, at Slepe, now St Ives, in Huntingdonshire, he there died and was buried.  HIS RELICS His body was found by a ploughman, in a pontifical habit and entire, in 1001, on April 24. By the fame of miracles performed at his relics, many resorted to the place, and a Benedictine priory was there built, though the saint’s body was soon after translated to the great abbey of Ramsey.  MIRACLES WROUGHT AT HIS TOMB Whitman, the third abbot at Ramsey, wrote a book of the miracles wrought at his tomb, which was afterwards augmented by Goscelin, a monk of Canterbury, about the year 1096.  THE CHURCH IN ...

He was a disciple of Saint Peter whose teaching was the basis for Mark’s Gospel. Mark is said to be the founder of the church of Alexandria.
