SAINT GERTRUDE, WIDOW AND ABBESS Saint Gertrude (Gertraud) was the foundress and first abbess of the monastery of Hamai (Hamoy, Hamage)  (Hamaticum) on the Scarpe near Marchiennes in Belgium. She was married to a man of high nobility, whom the  Bollandists * (Mart. II. 79) call Ingomar , while Migne * calls him Nigomar .  Once widowed, Gertrude devoted herself solely to prayer and works of charity. As Hubaldus , biographer of Saint Rictrudis  (Boll. Maji III. 87), relates, she combined a long life with many virtues. Among her children, Adalbaldus and Gerberta enjoy ecclesiastical veneration.  According to the Bollandists* (Febr. I. 295) , her relics are venerated in Douay. Bishop Saint Vindicianus of Cambray consecrated a church in her honour and solemnly raised her relics. The Roman Martyrology states:  "In the same country [Africa], Saint Majoricus, son of Saint Dionysia , who, being quite young and dreading the torments, was strengthened by the looks and words of his mother, and becoming stronger than the rest, expired in torments. His mother took him in her arms, and having buried him in her own house, was wont to pray assiduously at his sepulchre." PRAYER: Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Saint Majoricus may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

CLEMENT VI., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Pierre Roger was born 1291 in the castle of Maumont, department of Corrèze, France. He was elected pope, May 7, 1342, at Avignon, where he died December 6, 1352.  At the age of ten he entered the Benedictine monastery of La Chaise-Dieu (Haute- Loire), where he made his religious profession. After devoting some time to study at Paris, he graduated as doctor and became professor in that city.  Subsequent to his introduction to Pope John XXII by Cardinal Pierre Grouin de Mortemart, he rapidly rose from one ecclesiastical dignity to another. At first prior of Saint-Baudile at Nimes, then Abbot of Fécamp in Normandy, he became Bishop of Arras and Chancellor of France in 1328, was promoted to the Archbishopric of Sens in 1329, and to that of Rouen the following year.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 6th of December CLARA BURGIA, VIRGIN Clara Bugia (Bugni), of the Order of Saint Francis, was born in 1477 in Venice on the feast day of St Francis of Assisi . In holy baptism she received the name Blanca [Blanche].  SHE WAS UNANIMOUSLY CHOSEN AS MOTHER SUPERIOR When she entered a monastery in her eighteenth year, she pursued divine things with all zeal, enjoyed heavenly apparitions and in 1504 was unanimously chosen by her fellow sisters as Mother Superior, which office she held for seven years until she died on September 17, 1511. After being unjustly robbed of his kingdom by his brother, he entered religious life.  Later he regained royal dignity, but as king changed nothing in his monastic way of life. BLESSED ADOLPH KOLPING, PRIEST Blessed Adolph Kolping was born on December 8, 1813 in Kerpen as the fourth of five children to the poor shepherd Peter Kolping and his wife Anna Maria Zurheyden. He suffered from frail health during his childhood. THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF THE WORKING CLASS He proved to be an able student while in school from 1820 to 1826 but his poverty prevented him from furthering his education despite his commitment to pursue additional studies.  In 1831 he travelled to Cologne as a shoemaker's assistant and was shocked with the living conditions of the working class that lived there and this proved to be definitive in influencing his decision to become a priest; he remained a shoemaker until 1841.
