BL. GERARD OF VILLAMAGNA, HERMIT - 13 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 13th of May WELCOME! BLESSED GERARD OF VILLAMAGNA, HERMIT Blessed Gerard (Gerardus) was a hermit in Villamagna near Florence, where he enjoys a strong cult even today. Born around the year 1147 of poor country folks, the plague robbed him of his parents and a rich patrician family from Florence took him into their house. When he grew up, he accompanied his guardian on his trip to Jerusalem, was taken prisoner by the Saracens, and after both had suffered much, they were finally ransomed and returned home.  Afterwards, Gerard undertook further pilgrimages to the Holy Land and finally entered the Third Order of St Francis. From then on until his death, he served God continually, nursing the sick and supporting the poor with the alms he received. He followed a daily prayer schedule and never cut corners, so that he often prayed through the night because he had not been able to get through all the prayers during the day due t...

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 13th of May WELCOME! PASITHEA, VIRGIN AND ABBESS Pasithea, virgin and superior of the Capuchin nuns of Siena, whose body was found intact in 1657, is listed among the Praetermissi by the Bollandists * (III. 187). Migne* (diction. iconogr.) mentions her with the title "saint," which is erroneous, since Lechner * (Leben der Heil. a. d. O. d. Capuc. [Lives of the Saints of the Capuchin Order] III. 257) mentions her as just a "venerable servant of God."  Her life story is very edifying and wonderful; here a brief summary: She was the daughter of a middle-class couple named Peter and Camilla Crogi, of Siena, and already as a child she had frequent conversations with the saints, who appeared to her regularly. At the age of seven, she took the vow of perpetual chastity. As she grew older, she began to practice severe penance. Although she was nearly always spotted in prayer, kneeling all day long, she did not miss ...

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 13th of May BLESSED ELLINGER, ABBOT Blessed Abbot Ellinger of the Tegernsee monastery in Bavaria was a faithful guardian of discipline and order in degenerate times, and a courageous hero against the attacks of the wicked.  Elected abbot around the year 1016, he worked incessantly to stop the abuses that had crept in and to raise religious discipline. These his efforts caused him great contradictions, which finally grew so oppressive that he gave way and took refuge at the Niederalteich monastery (in present-day Lower Bavaria).  While Ellinger was there devoted to prayer and holy exercises, the Lord enlightened the souls of his wayward sons. They realised the wrong they had done, and implored their abbot to come back to them. If before Ellinger had steered clear of anger and pride, he now yielded to humble entreaty and returned.  For almost 40 years he presided over the monastery and led an exemplary religious l...
