ST ROGER, BISHOP OF CANNA - 30 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 30th of December WELCOME! SAINT ROGER, BISHOP OF CANNA This holy bishop was born in Canna [Cannae], now called Canna distrutta . Well-mannered and educated, he first became a cleric at the local cathedral and finally a bishop. As such, this zealous, humble man was a veritable blessing to his flock. His funeral took place in his episcopal city. BLESSED EUGENIA RAVASCO, VIRGIN AND FOUNDRESS  The third of six children, Eugenia Ravasco was born on January 4, 1845 in Milan, Italy. When she was three years old her mother died and her father moved to Genoa where his two brothers lived, taking with him his eldest son, Ambrose, and the youngest daughter, Elisa. Eugenia remained in Milan with her Aunt Marietta Anselmi, who became a second mother to her and carefully educated her in the faith. In 1852, the family was reunited in Genoa and following her father's death in March 1855, Eugenia went to live for some time with her uncle Luigi Ravasco and her aunt Elisa and their 10 children. BLESSED GIOVANNI MARIA BOCCARDO, PRIEST AND FOUNDER Blessed Giovanni Maria Boccardo was born in Testona di Moncalieri (near Turin), Italy, November 20, 1848. He studied at the diocesan seminary of Turin and was ordained in 1871. For the next eleven years he provided spiritual direction to seminarians in Chieri and Turin. His first parochial appointment was to Pancalieri in 1882, and he remained there until his death.  Although he enjoyed the seminary, he viewed his parochial assignment as an opportunity for evangelization. When, in 1884, cholera struck the village, he personally tended the sick. Afterwards he established the Hospice of Charity to care for those left abandoned or homeless by the epidemic, including orphans and the poor elderly. SAINT LAURENTIUS, ABBOT Saint Laurentius [Lorenzo], a priest and abbot of the Order of St Basil at Frazanone [Frazzanò] in Sicily, is mentioned by Ferrarius * in the list of Italian saints on April 30. BL. GERARD CAGNOLI, HERMIT - 29 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of December WELCOME! BLESSED GERARD CAGNOLI, HERMIT Gerard ( Gerardus, Geraldus ), from Valenza in Piedmont (on the river Po), descended from the noble Cagnoli family. In his youth he looked after his sick mother as a good son. When she had died, Gerard put on the hermit's garb and after several pilgrimages, he lived as a hermit near Mount Etna in Sicily.  In his 40th year he entered the Order of  Saint Francis of Assisi . Gerard was very strict with himself, and his extraordinary severity against the flesh was made even more extreme by fasting and mortification of every kind. On the other hand, he and his fellow brothers were indescribably mild and gentle. Gerard possessed the gift of miracles. Before his end he was honoured by an apparition of the Blessed Virgin. ANTHONY COLLIER, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 27 JUNE

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 27th of June WELCOME! Father Anthony (Tony) Collier was born on June 20, 1913 in Clogherhead, County Louth, Ireland. He was educated at Christian Brothers in Drogheda (1921- 1926) and St Patrick's College, Armagh (1926 - 1931). He joined the Missionary Society of St Columban (the Columban Fathers) in Dalgan Park in 1931 and was ordained there in 1938. Father Collier went on mission to Korea in 1939. Father Collier was in charge of the second Columban parish in Chunchon, Korea, when he was taken into custody by North Korean soldiers. He was questioned, and because he refused to abandon his parishioners, he was killed by the Communist forces on June 27, 1950.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 2nd of April WELCOME! BLESSED NICHOLAS CHARNETSKY, BISHOP AND MARTYR Nicholas Charnetsky (Mykolai Charnetskyi, Mykolay Charnetsky) was born in the village of Semakivtsia, Ukraine, on December 14, 1884. He came from a large family, all of them devout members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church which is in communion with the Bishop of Rome and is distinct from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. From a young age, Nicholas had expressed a desire to become a priest and when he was 18 years of age, the Ukrainian Catholic  Bishop Gregory Khomyshyn sent him to study at the Ukrainian College in Rome. After his ordination to the Catholic priesthood in 1909, Father Nicholas returned from Ukraine to Rome so that he might complete a Doctorate in Theology, which he did the following year.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 17th of May WELCOME! BLESSED IVAN ZIATYK, PRIEST AND MARTYR Ivan Ziatyk (commemorated on May 17 and June 28) was born on December 26, 1899 near Sanok in southeastern Poland. In 1919, he entered the Ukrainian Catholic seminary in Przemyśl. He was ordained a priest in 1923. From 1925 until 1935, he worked the seminary as a prefect and lecturer. In 1935, Father Ivan joined the Redemptorists. In 1941, he was made superior of the monastery dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God in German-occupied Tannstadt (now Ternopil, Ukraine), where he served until taking the same position at a monastery in Zboiska in 1944. After the Second World War, the Soviet regime renewed its oppression of Catholics. In 1946, all Greek-Catholic bishops were arrested and, by spring, the Soviet secret police had arrested all Redemptorists in Ternopil, Stanislaviv, Lviv, and Zboiska, relocating them to an unheated wing of the monastery in Holosko. BL. GREGORY KHOMYSHYN, BISHOP AND MARTYR - 28 DECEMBER

BLESSED GREGORY KHOMYSHYN, BISHOP AND MARTYR Blessed Gregory Khomyshyn (Hryhoriy Khomyshyn) was born on March 25, 1867 in the village of Hadynkivtsi, eastern Galicia. He graduated from Lviv seminary and was ordained a priest on November 18, 1893. He continued to study at the University of Vienna, and in 1902, he was appointed the rector of the Greek Catholic Theological Seminary in Lviv. In 1904, he was consecrated as the bishop for Stanyslaviv.  Throughout his tenure, spanning over four decades, he was considered the second most powerful figure in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Bishop Gregory adopted a more westward orientation, further emphasizing the Uniate Church's relationship with Rome. BL. EDWARD FOCHERINI, JOURNALIST AND MARTYR - 27 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 27th of December WELCOME! BLESSED EDWARD FOCHERINI, JOURNALIST AND MARTYR Odoardo Focherini (Edward Focherini), born on June 6, 1907, was married to Maria Marchesi, and the couple had seven children. A staunch Roman Catholic journalist, Edward issued false documents to Jews during World War II in order for them to escape the Nazi regime. This covert operation was discovered, leading to his arrest on March 11, 1944. Edward was then sent to prison in Bologna and later to a concentration camp in Hersbruck where he died on December 27, 1944 due to an untreated leg infection. His final words were reported as: "I declare that I die in the purest Roman Catholic faith and in full submission to the will of God". He had saved a total of 105 Jewish lives. ST WOLBODO, BISHOP OF LIEGE - 21 APRIL

SAINT WOLBODO, BISHOP OF LIEGE Saint Wolbodo ( Volbodo ), commemorated on April 21 and April 30, was Bishop of Liège (Lüttich). He rests in the St Lawrence Church in Liège. Wolbodo, who is also referred to as "Blessed Wolbodo", was of born in Flanders of noble family and was probably educated by pious monks in Utrecht. An excellent student, Wolbodo later became Magister scholarum and soon also provost at Utrecht Cathedral. Emperor Henry II, the saint, counted him among his friends and made him his court chaplain.
