REINHILDE OF BERG, ABBESS Reinhilde ( Relindis , Relinde, [Relinde van den Bergh]), remembered on August 22, was an abbess in Berg, who was very learned and pious. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa called her to the  women's monastery of Elten for the reformation of the order.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 22nd of August NICHOLAS III., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Giovanni Gaetani Orsini was born at Rome, c. 1216; elected at Viterbo, November 25, 1277; he died at Soriano, near Viterbo, August 22, 1280.  His father, Matteo Rosso, was of the illustrious Roman family of the Orsini, while his mother, Perna Gaetana, belonged to the noble house of the Gaetani.  As senator Matteo Rosso had defended Rome against Frederick II and saved it to the papacy. He was a friend of St Francis of Assisi and belonged to his third order, facts not without influence on the son, for both as cardinal and pope the latter was ever kindly disposed towards the Franciscans.  We have no knowledge of his education and early life. GREGORY IX., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Ugolino, Count of Segni, was born about 1145, at Anagni in the Campagna; he died August 22, 1241, at Rome. He received his education at the Universities of Paris and Bologna.  After the accession of Innocent III to the papal throne, Ugolino, who was a nephew of Innocent III, was successively appointed papal chaplain, Archpriest of St Peter's, and Cardinal-Deacon of Saint' Eustachio in 1198. In May, 1206, he succeeded Octavian as Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia and Velletri. A year later he and Cardinal Brancaleone were sent as papal legates to Germany to mediate between Philip of Swabia and Otto of Brunswick, both of whom laid claim to the German throne subsequent to the death of Henry VI. SAINT ANDREW OF FIESOLE, DEACON AND CONFESSOR  (Saint Andrew the Scot) was Archdeacon of Fiesole, born probably at the beginning of the ninth century; died about 877.  St Andrew and his sister St Bridget the Younger were born in Ireland of noble parents. There they seem to have studied under St Donatus, an Irish scholar, and when the latter decided to make a long pilgrimage to the holy places of Italy, Andrew accompanied him.  A PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY PLACES Donatus and Andrew arrived at Fiesole when the people were assembled to elect a new bishop. BLESSED WILLIAM LACY, PRIEST AND MARTYR  ⬅️ The English Martyrs Born at “Hanton”, Yorkshire (probably Houghton or Tosside, West Riding); suffered at York, August 22, 1582. He married a widow, named Cresswell, whose sons, Arthur and Joseph, became Jesuits.  Little is related of his family by his biographers. He had a brother Ralph of Preston in Amounderness, a sister Barbara, and nephews (apparently her sons) Robert and William.  He held a position of emolument under the Crown, possibly as coroner, till about 1565.
