SAINT GERMANUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS - 2 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 2nd of May WELCOME! SAINT GERMANUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Nothing much is known about this Saint Germanus except his name. However, he definitely existed. It is certain that he is not identical with the  other martyr of that name who is commemorated on the same day. This fact is ascertained by the names of his companions - all the ancient manuscripts agree on those names. His fellow martyrs were called  Celestinus, Felix, Cetinus, Urbanus, Bellicus (Bellacus, Hellacus, Bellapus) and Privata. When and where they obtained the martyr's crown is unknown. Relics of them are kept in Bologna. Perhaps this location coincides with their place of martyrdom (I. 179). CONRAD OF SELDENBÜREN, FOUNDER AND MARTYR - 2 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 2nd of May WELCOME! CONRAD OF SELDENBÜREN, FOUNDER AND MARTYR   Engelberg Monastery  Conrad, founder of the Engelberg monastery in Switzerland and martyr, was descended from the Barons of Seldenbüren [Sellenbüren]. Their ancestral castle was located on the Albis near Zürich. Raised in the fear of God and of upright Christian conduct, Conrad always had an inclination towards monastic life. From time immemorial his illustrious family had been founding and sponsoring monasteries, e.g. Regibert (Reginbert) of Saint Blase Abbey (Sankt Blasien) in the Black Forest.  After the death of his parents, Conrad was free to manage the assets he had inherited and immediately started looking for a suitable place for building a monastery on his estate. After various misfortunes in trying to erect an abbey - so runs the legend -  he received instruction through an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to build the project in...

ST WALDEBERT, ABBOT OF LUXEUIL - 2 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 2nd of May WELCOME! ST WALDEBERT, ABBOT OF LUXEUIL Saint Waldebert (Waldebertus, Walbertus), commemorated on May 2 and May 6, was Abbot of Luxeuil (Luxovium) in Burgundy - the successor of St Eustasius. His life, or rather the miracles that occurred after his death, were described by the abbot Addo [Ado] (Hermiricus) in the 10th century. Of high birth and native to the Ponthieu region (pagus Pontivus) , Waldebert made the best use of his inherited large fortune by giving away the largest part of it for the poor and needy. His biography seems to indicate that he was born in the Meaux area. It specifies the place Nant (later called Monteuil).  It was through the persuasion and example of  St Eustasius that Waldebert put on the armour of Christ instead of the worldly armour that he had worn up to then. He became such an excellent monk that he was given permission to live in a hermitage outside the monastery, and fol...

SAINT GUIBORATA, ANCHORESS AND MARTYR - 2 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 2nd of May SAINT GUIBORATA, ANCHORESS AND MARTYR Saint Guiborata, also called Wiborada or Weibrath, was a devout anchoress in St Gallen [St Gall] in Switzerland. She came from an old family in Swabia. Even when she was still in her father's house, she lived like in a monastery, focusing solely on prayer and work. As a dutiful daughter, she eagerly carried out not only the orders but also every wish of her parents.  Her brother Hitto, who had become a priest, led her on the way of salvation. After a pilgrimage, which they had made together to the graves of the princes of the apostles, Hitto became a monk in St Gallen, but Guiborata combined the contemplative life with that of active charity. She even seems to have exerted an influence on bishops early on, and Bishop Salomon II of Constance (885–891) in particular made use of her assistance.  She then lived on a neighbouring mountain in a cell near St George's Church. ...
