  ROGATION DAYS The tradition of Rogation Days and prayer processions goes back to the 4th century, when a large prayer procession was introduced across the fields on St Mark's Day (April 25) in Rome (Major Rogation Day). MAJOR ROGATION DAY In the late 5th century, after an earthquake and crop failures in southern France, Bishop Mammertus of Vienne ordered three days of atonement before the Ascension, combined with fasting and prayer processions. The Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the Feast of the Ascension are also traditionally observed as days of solemn supplication, these are the Minor Rogation Days. MINOR ROGATION DAYS This custom was adopted throughout the Roman Church in the 8th century. People asked God for mercy, for fertility in fields and fields, for protection from hail, frost and other storms. The Litany of the Saints and the associated prayers are recited in procession. Saint Julia was a noble virgin at Carthage, who, when that city was taken by Genseric in 439, was sold for a slave to a pagan merchant of Syria.  SHE WAS SOLD AS A SLAVE Under the most mortifying employments of her station, by cheerfulness and patience she found, besides her sanctification, a present happiness and comfort which the world could not have afforded.  FASTING AND PRAYER All the time she was not employed in her master’s business was devoted to prayer and reading books of piety. She fasted very rigorously every day but Sunday; nor could all the entreaties of her master, who was charmed with her fidelity and other virtues, nor the hardships of her situation, prevail with her to be more tender of herself.  THE BUSINESS TRIP The merchant thought proper to carry her with him in one of his voyages to Gaul, where he imported the most valuable commodities

WIPERT, BISHOP OF RATZEBURG  Wipert of Blücher (Wipert von Blücher) was made bishop of Ratzeburg (Germany) in 1356, although he did not belong to the Premonstratensian order like the other bishops of Ratzeburg.  HE LED HIS DIOCESE WITH GREAT WISDOM He was the successor of Otto von Gronow. He led his diocese with great wisdom and knew how to keep neighbours striving for church property in check. Wipert died in 1376 and was buried in the Ratzeburg Cathedral. BLESSED JOHN FOREST, PRIEST AND MARTYR  ⬅️ Martyrs of England and Wales Blessed John Forest was born in 1471, presumably at Oxford, where his surname was then not unknown; he suffered May 22, 1538. At the age of twenty he received the habit of St Francis at Greenwich, in the church of the Friars Minor of the Regular Observance, called for brevity’s sake “Observants”.  QUEEN CATHERINE'S CONFESSOR Nine years later we find him at Oxford, studying theology. He is commonly styled “Doctor” though, beyond the steps which he took to qualify as bachelor of divinity, no positive proof of his further progress has been found. SAINT BOBO, CONFESSOR  Saint Bobo was a gentleman of Provence and a great soldier, the father of the poor, and protector of his country against the Saracens , whom he often defeated when they poured into Provence by sea from Spain and Africa.  A PILGRIMAGE TO ROME He afterwards led a penitential contemplative life for many years; and being on a pilgrimage to Rome, died at Voghera, near Pavia, in 985.  HE IS VENERATED IN PROVENCE His name is in great veneration in Provence, and his festival a holiday of precept in most cities in Lombardy. ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 22nd of May WELCOME!   SAINT IVO OF KERMARTIN, CONFESSOR  Saint Yvo Helori, or son of Helor [also known as Yvo, Ives, Erwan, Iwan, Youenn, Yves Hélory ] descended from a noble and virtuous family near Treguier in Brittany, was born in 1253.  HIS STUDIES He studied grammar at home with unusual application and success, and at fourteen years of age was sent to Paris, where he learned the liberal arts and divinity: he applied himself to the civil and canon law at Orleans.  His mother was wont frequently to say to him that he ought so to live as became a saint, to which his answer always was, that he hoped to be one.
