  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 20th of March WELCOME! SAINTS GRATUS AND MARCELLUS, PRIESTS AND CONFESSORS Gratus and Marcellus, Priests and Confessors (March 20) served under Saint Mercurialis , Bishop of Forli ( Forum Livii ), whose feast is celebrated on April 30. Both are described as priests filled with the Spirit and power of God, who performed many miracles in the name of Jesus. The former was struck blind when he cast into a well the dragon that his bishop had slain; Marcellus, however, restored his sight. Yet Saint Gratus, too, restored the sight of a blind man at the behest of  Bishop Mercurialis . He asked the man if he believed in Jesus Christ, and - upon receiving an affirmative answer - commanded him to open his eyes and see in the name of Jesus, which indeed came to pass. SAINT JOZEF BILCZEWSKI, ARCHBISHOP OF LVIV Pope John Paul II  beatified Jozef Bilczewski in 2001 and  Pope Benedict XVI  canonised him four years later. Jozef was born in 1860 in Wilamovice in southern Poland and attended secondary school in Wadowice, the future birthplace of  the Polish pope . He was ordained priest in Krakow by Cardinal Albino Dunajewski. He received a doctorate in theology from the University of Vienna and eventually became professor of dogmatic theology at the John Casimir University of Lviv. Throughout his academic career he devoted himself to scientific work and his exceptional intellectual abilities were recognised by Franz Joseph, the Emperor of Austria, who presented Fr Jozef to the Holy Father as a candidate for the vacant Metropolitan See of Lviv. This priest of the Order of  Saint Benedict  was called "Saint" already during his lifetime. Foreseeing his death, he took the Bread of Life as viaticum at the last Mass he celebrated and died shortly thereafter in 1701 at Vendome , France. VENERABLE SEBASTIANA, VIRGIN Venerable Sebastiana, a virgin of the third order of  Saint Dominic  was born in 1602 in Pasig on the Philippine Islands. From her youth she lived a very austere life and during the last 15 years of her life she consumed no other food than Holy Communion.  Her obedience, humility and love were most remarkable. Prisons, hospitals and poorhouses were her favourite places to spend time in order to assist and comfort people. Our dear Saviour also awarded her with the gift of prophecy. She died at the age of 40 in 1642 .     WELCOME! CLAUDE, BISHOP OF AUXERRE Claude (Claudius), remembered on March 20 and March 30, was Bishop of Auxerre and founder of the Academy in Paris. Buc. Sppl.*  states that he was from Ireland and a college of Blessed Alcuin. He died in 818 and was buried in the church of Saint Amator. In A.D. 797, these holy monks of the Laura of Saint Sabas near Jerusalem were murdered by the Saracens for being Christians: John, Sergius, Patrick (Patricius), Cosmas, Anasius, Theoctistus. 14 others, whose names have not come down to us, were also killed for the same reason. Eight days earlier, 40 monks were martyred,  who are commemorated in May. Blessed Evangelist (Evangelista) and Peregrine (Peregrinus) lived in the 13th century, became famous for virtue and miracles as hermits of the Augustinian Order and were buried in the church of Saint Euphemia at Verona. SAINT ALEXANDRA AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Saints Alexandra, Claudia, Euphrasia, Matrona, Juliana, Euphemia and Theodosia suffered with Saint Derphuta and her sister under Emperor Maximian at Amysi in Paphlagonia on the Black Sea. They died a most cruel death for the sake of their faith, being stripped of their clothes, struck with rods, and after their breasts were cut off, hang up and mauled until their entrails became visible, after which they were thrown into a red-hot furnace.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 20th of March SAINT ARCHIPPUS, PRIEST AND MARTYR The name Archippus is derived from the Greek, meaning lord of the horses. Saint Paul the apostle, in his letter to Philemon (v. 2), calls Archippus his "companion in arms", and some hagiographers consider him a bishop of Colossae. Others, like Baronius *, say that Archippus was a deacon. Estius, however, agrees with the most recent theories (provided by Dr. v. Allioli) who reckon our saint to have been a priest who led this community during the absence of Bishop Epaphras of Colossae. In this light, the words of the holy apostle in the Epistle to the Colossians (4:17) make perfect sense: "Say to Archippus: Consider the office which you have received in the Lord, that you administer it perfectly."  According to Calmet *, the Greeks venerate our saint on November 22, believing that he was martyred under Nero at Colossae; the Latins celebrate Archippus' feast ...

(1693) Saint Saracenus, martyr in Spain (Leon), is listed in  Migne *. He must have been a converted Saracen who was killed by the Mahometans for accepting the religion of Jesus. His martyrdom is said to have taken place in A.D. 974 after a long period of imprisonment.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 20th of March SAINT HEREBERT, PRIEST AND HERMIT Saint Herebert (Herebertus, Heribertus)  was a student of the holy Bishop Cuthbert , who ordained him a priest. He lived as a hermit in the English county of Cumberland (Cumbria).  Our Saint died in great holiness on March 20, 687 in the city of Carlisle (Lugubalia) at the same time as St Cuthbert. One day, Herebert had gone to visit his bishop and teacher again. He met him sick. He was even more saddened by Cuthbert's prophecy that death would soon sever their friendship on this earth. Thereupon Herebert threw himself on the ground before his holy friend and did not stop praying that it might be granted to him to enter eternal rest along with him, until he was heard and died at the same time.
