CHIARA LUBICH, FOUNDRESS - 14 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 14th of March WELCOME! CHIARA LUBICH, FOUNDRESS The second of four children, she was born to  Luigi Lubich and his wife Luigia on January 22, 1920 and baptised Silvia. At the age of 15, she joined Catholic Action in Trento and became a diocesan youth leader. She attended a teachers' college and became a passionate student of philosophy. Her great desire was to attend the Catholic University of Milan, but she failed to win a scholarship. Initially deeply distressed, she suddenly felt consoled by an inner certainty from God: "I will be your teacher". As soon as she graduated, she took jobs teaching in elementary schools in the valley regions around Trento (1938-39), and then in Cognola (1940-1943), a town close to Trento, in a school for orphans run by the Capuchins. In the autumn of 1943, she left teaching and enrolled at the Ca'Foscari University of Venice, continuing to give private lessons. However, due to th...

SAINT PAULINA, RECLUSE - 14 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 14th of March   WELCOME! SAINT PAULINA, RECLUSE Saint Paulina was a recluse of noble birth at Thuringia (Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt), who shone with countless miracles in life and after death. She died in A.D. 1107 and is called a "venerable and holy woman" by Trithemius (chron. Hirsaug.).   As widow of the knight Udalrich she founded the monastery named after her (around the year 1100). Her biography, which existed earlier and was written by a certain Sigelot, has been lost. Only in the name Paulinzelle [Paulinzella] , also called "Zelle" (cell) for short, a memory of her has been preserved.  The place lies in a small, deep valley surrounded by woods, and still contains the ruins of the beautiful Benedictine abbey that used to exist here, together with a three-aisled church. Near this spot the saint was voluntarily locked up - perhaps she was confined at the so-called "nun's room". Several writers...

Saint Mathildis (Maud, Mathilda) was daughter of Theodoric, a powerful Saxon count. Her parents, being sensible that piety is the only true greatness, placed her very young in the monastery of Erfurt, of which her grandmother Maud, who had renounced the world in her widowhood, was then abbess.  Here our saint acquired an extraordinary relish for prayer and spiritual reading; and learned to work at her needle, and to employ all the precious moments of life in something serious and worthy the great end of her creation.  HER MARRIAGE TO HENRY THE FOWLER She remained in that house an accomplished model of all virtues, till her parents married her to Henry, son of Otho, duke of Saxony, in 913. Her husband, surnamed the Fowler, from his fondness for the diversion of hawking, then much in vogue, became duke of Saxony by the death of his father, in 916; ...
