  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 26th of July WELCOME! SAINT GLISENS, CONFESSOR Saint Glisens ( Glisentus ) (feast day: July 26) was a confessor who likely lived as a hermit near Brescia (Brixia) during the 8th century. No accounts of his life exist that could lay claim to historical credibility. A chapel - created from the cave where he had prayed and performed penance - is the only historical monument we possess regarding him and his veneration. Legend has it that he fought against the pagans under  Emperor Charlemagne and, through the struggle against and victory over his own self, exchanged his earthly life for a heavenly one. Forest animals - specifically a female bear and a goat - would come to him, bringing the food he needed. WILLIAM WARD, PRIEST AND MARTYR William Ward, whose true name was Webster, was born at Thornby, in Westmoreland, and educated in the catholic religion. He performed his studies abroad in the English college at Douay, where I find him admitted to the college oath, in 1605, and ordained priest. and sent upon the English mission, in 1608.  The best and fullest account that I have met with of this holy man is in a manuscript relation, written by a priest, who was his acquaintance and ghostly child; only that he is in a mistake, when he affirms him to have been made priest in the English seminary at Rheims for the seminary had been removed from Rheims to Douay fifteen years before Mr Ward was made priest. BLESSED EDWARD THWING, PRIEST AND MARTYR Colleges at the University of Douai, 16th century   Edward Thwing was born of an ancient family at Hurst, near York. He was first an alumnus of the college of Rheims; from whence, he was sent to Rome, in 1587; but was obliged, for his health, to return again to Rheims. Here he was presented to holy orders, and ordained priest at Laon, December 20, 1590, being at that time, it appears by the Douay Diary, master of the Hebrew and Greek tongues, and professor of rhetoric in the college.  He was sent upon the English mission from Douay in 1597, after the college was returned to that university. BLESSED ROBERT NUTTER, PRIEST AND MARTYR Robert Nutter, brother of Mr John Nutter , who suffered in 1584, was born in Lancashire, and performed his higher studies in Douay college, during its residence at Rheims, where he was ordained priest, December 21, 1581, with  Mr George Haydock , and divers others; and, in the beginning of the following year, was sent upon the English mission.  Here I find him prisoner, in the Tower, in February, 1583-4, where he was put down in a dungeon, for seven-and-forty days, loaded with chains for the greater part of the time, and twice tortured: and in the November following, was lodged again in the same hole, and remained there for two months and fourteen days. BLESSED GEORGE SWALLOWELL, MARTYR George Swallowell  was born in the bishopric of Durham and brought up in the protestant religion; and for some time officiated in the double capacity of reader and of school-master, at Houghton Spring, in the same bishopric.  Going one day to visit a catholic gentleman, imprisoned for his recusancy, and falling in discourse on the subject of religion, he was so close pressed by the gentleman upon the article of his mission, and that of his prelates, that he was forced, by way of a last shift, to shelter himself under the queen's spiritual supremacy, and to derive their commissions from her authority. BLESSED JOHN INGRAM, PRIEST AND MARTYR [Blessed John was an] English martyr, born at Stoke Edith, Herefordshire, in 1565; executed at Newcastle-on-Tyne, July 26, 1594. He was probably the son of Anthony Ingram of Wolford, Warwickshire, by Dorothy, daughter of Sir John Hungerford.  He was educated first in Worcestershire, then at the English College, Reims, at the Jesuit College, Pont-a-Mousson, and at the English College, Rome. Ordained at Rome in 1589, he went to Scotland early in 1592, and there frequented the company of Lords Huntly, Angus, and Erroll, the Abbot of Dumbries, and Sir Walter Lindsay of Balgavies.  Captured on the Tyne, November 25, 1593, he was imprisoned successively at Berwick, Durgam, York, and in the Tower of London, in which place he suffered the severest tortures with great constancy, and wrote twenty Latin epigrams which have survived. SERVANT OF GOD JEAN LE VACHER, PRIEST AND MARTYR Jean le Vacher (Johann) was a priest of the Lazarist Congregation and martyr.  Saint Vincent de Paul who, during his captivity there, had learned about the sad situation of the Christian slaves in Tunis, sent Father Louis Guerin (Ludwig) to Tunis in 1645 to minister to them. When he could no longer cope with the workload on his own, Father Jean le Vacher was dispatched to Tunis to assist him. This priest [born on March 15, 1619] came from Ecouen. When he arrived [on November 22, 1677], he found Tunis ravaged by the plague.  Both missionaries devoted themselves to the unfortunate plague sufferers until they themselves were both struck by this gruesome disease. SAINT KELIUS, ABBOT Saint Kelius  [Celedaibhall], commemorated on July 26 [September 14], was abbot and confessor in Ireland, the son of Scandalius, surnamed Daballus. He belonged to the monastery of Bangor in the British principality of Wales, which was extraordinarily rich in saints.  There he held the office of professor and doctor for a long time because of his exceptional scholarship. Elevated to the rank of abbot because of his no less distinguished sanctity, he shone with a wealth of merit. He made a pilgrimage to Rome and died there, in the 59th year of his life, a blessed death in 927 . (Buc. Suppl.) SAINT PASTOR, MARTYR On July 26, Piazza * also lists two Roman Saints called Pastor on July 26:  Saint Pastor, Priest,  and Saint Pastor, a disciple of Bishop Erasmus , who died from the effects of the terrible torment of being tied to an untamed horse and dragged through the streets. The relics of this Saint Pastor are at Saint Peter's in the Vatican, where in former times an altar was erected in his honour (VI. 299-302). SAINT PASTOR, ABBOT AND CONFESSOR Saint Pastor ( July 26 ), an abbot and confessor,  contemporary of the great Saint Antony  (Antonius), lived for many years in the strictest austerity in Scete (Sceté) in the desert. That excellent teacher of the spiritual life had taught him (cf. Jan. II. 142) that one must always humbly lay down one's sins before the Lord and never ever feel safe from temptation to the end of life. Saint Pastor was so dead to the world and avoided all risks involved with it, so that he did not even want to see his mother when she came to the convent, but comforted her that they would meet again in heaven and there spend ample time together  (VI. 307).   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 26th of July   WELCOME! SAINT PARASCEVE, MARTYR Saint Parasceve is venerated only by the Greeks, although she is said to have been born near Rome. Her alleged life story is full of contradictions: she apparently became a nun at a time when there were no monasteries and, although a nun, is said to have travelled around and preached faith in Jesus Christ in various places and converted well-known heroes and Jews to the faith. Some hostile Jews reported her to the officials of Emperor Antoninus. As a Christian she refused to follow the order to worship the pagan idols. When tormented with boiling oil, she splashed some on the Emperor's face, whereupon he went blind, but through her prayer he regained his sight, etc. In church art she carries a small cross in her hands.
