HILDEBALD, ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE Hildebald, Archbishop of Cologne  The name Hildebald is derived from the Old German child , meaning battle , and bald , which translates as mighty . Hildebald, Archbishop ( September 3 ; alternatively October 2 ). His name is also spelled Hildeboldus, Hyldebaldus, Hildibaldus, Hildivaldus, Hildialdus, Hildepold, Hiltibald, Hiddibald , and Addebald.   He was the first Archbishop of Cologne; prior to his tenure, the see had been occupied merely by suffragans of Trier and subsequently of Mainz. Castellanus*  and Gelenius* include him among the saints. He lived during the reigns of Emperors  Charlemagne  and Louis the Pious. He held the See of Cologne from the year 784 to 819. VENERABLE WILBERT, ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE Venerable Wilbert (Wilbertus, Willibertus, Wullibertus, Weribertus) , remembered on September 11, was Archbishop of Cologne from January 7, 870 to September 11, 889.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 11th of October WELCOME! SAINT BRUNO, ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE  In 940, Bruno began to exercise the functions of imperial chancellor. After he had received deacon’s orders in 941 or 942, the emperor appointed him, despite his youth, Abbot of the monasteries of Lorsch, near Worms, and of  Corvei on the Weser. In both communities he soon restored the strict observance of Saint Benedict’s Rule.  He was ordained priest about 950 and in 951 became archchancellor; even from the year 940 on, all Otto’s state papers were prepared by Bruno’s hand.  As the executive administration of affairs was conducted chiefly through the royal chancery, Bruno’s influence no extended to all parts of the empire. SAINT HERIBERT, ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE  Saint Heribert was Archbishop of Cologne; he was born at Worms, c. 970 and died at Cologne, March 16 , 1021 . His father was Duke Hugo of Worms.  HE SPENT SOME TIME AT THE MONASTERY OF GORZE After receiving his education at the cathedral school of Worms, he spent some time as guest at the monastery of Gorze, after which he became provost at the cathedral of Worms.  HE WAS ORDAINED PRIEST In 994 he was ordained priest; in the same year King Otto III appointed him chancellor for Italy and four years later also for Germany, a position which he held until the death of Otto III on January 23 , 1002 .   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of December WELCOME!   SAINT ANNO, ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE, CONFESSOR Saint Anno, a young nobleman, served in the army, but was very young when, by the exhortations of an uncle, a pious canon of Bamberg, he renounced all earthly pursuits, and dedicated himself to God in an ecclesiastical state at Bamberg.  HE DEDICATED HIMSELF TO AN ECCLESIASTICAL STATE AT BAMBERG His improvement in virtue and learning was much spoken of at court, and the emperor, Henry III. or The Black, called him near his person: and some time after nominated him provost of Goslar in Lower Saxony, and, in 1056, archbishop of Cologne.  The tears he abundantly shed during the whole ceremony of his consecration were a proof of his sincere humility and devotion.  THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR WAS HIS SOUL'S DELIGHT The foot of the altar was his soul’s delight, comfort, and refuge.
