ST GRIMOALD, MARTYR - 16 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 16th of July WELCOME! SAINT GRIMOALD, MARTYR The name Grimoald - derived from the Old German grim (stern) and bald/vald (strong, mighty), signifying something like " stern lord " was also borne by several Dukes of Bavaria and other rulers of early times.  Saint Grimoald, commemorated on July 16, was a martyred (in a church in today's Belgium) alongside  Saint Reineldis and Saint Gondulf . [ Some sources  claim that he was a deacon.] (Information from Stadler 's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints, Volume  5, Augsburg, 1882, p. 59) Stadler's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints - Sources and Abbreviations PRAYER: Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Saint Grimoald may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. ST GONDULF, MARTYR - 16 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 16th of July WELCOME! SAINT GONDULF, MARTYR  According to Migne *, Saint Gondulf ( Gondulphus ) was a martyr from Zande in Belgium. Along with  Saint Grimoald and Saint Reineldis , he was killed inside the church around the year 680, presumably by the Saxons, who frequently launched devastating raids into neighboring Christian lands at that time. Elsewhere, the same source specifies an unnamed location near Soignies in Hainaut as the actual site of the atrocity. We have found no mention of this in the  Bollandists *; consequently, we report the above with considerable reservation, as it is highly unlikely that such details would have escaped their notice had the accounts been well-founded. ST GONDULPH, BISHOP OF MAASTRICHT - 16 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 16th of July WELCOME! SAINT GONDULPH, BISHOP OF MAASTRICHT 📷 PublicDomainPictures    Saint Gondulph, Bishop, also spelled Gondulphus, Gondulfus , Gundulphus - or Gondon in French, hailed from an ancient Lotharingian noble family; others, however, claim he was the son of Munderic of Austrasia, who was himself a direct descendant of the Frankish King Merovech and his son Childeric. It was in Maastricht ( Trajectum ad Mosam ), where he had grown up, that he embarked upon his apostolic calling. Around the year 600, he succeeded  Saint Monulf as the 12th or 13th Bishop of Maastricht and the 22nd Bishop of Tongeren, having previously devoted a long period to establishing and spreading the Kingdom of Christ through both word and deed. Detached from all worldly cares, he lived solely for God. He travelled throughout his diocese, confirming through signs and miracles what he had planted through his preaching. He ev...

His name appears written in various ways: as Monulphus , and subsequently as Numolfus and Mondolphus (as it appears on his tomb). He occupies the twenty-second place in the catalogue of the Bishops of Tongeren found in the Gallia Christiana (III. 808 et seq.).   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 16th of July WELCOME! He achieved great renown through his piety, his superior intellect, and the positions of honour and office entrusted to him by popes and kings.  According to historical records, he was the fourteenth Abbot of Saint-Denis (Dionysius) in France, an advisor to King Pepin, a palace chaplain, and archpriest of the kingdoms of Austrasia, Neustria, and Burgundy; he also served as arch-chaplain (or Grand Almoner) of France, a role he retained under Carloman and Charlemagne. BL. ROBERT GRISSOLD, MARTYR - 16 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 16th of July WELCOME! BLESSED ROBERT GRISSOLD, MARTYR Robert Grissold (or Griswold) was born at Romington, in Warwickshire, and was servant to Mr Sheldon, of Broadway, in Worcestershire. He was, says my manuscript, simple and upright in his actions; unlearned, but enlightened with the Holy Ghost, feared God, hated sin, led a single life and chaste, was kind to his friends, mild in conversation, devout in prayer, bold and constant in professing the catholic religion, and heartily loved and reverenced catholic priests. When his cousin Clement Grissold apprehended him going upon the way with Mr Sugar , he said to him, Cousin, if you go your way, you may: I will not, answered he, except I may have my friend with me. Then the constable, Richard Smith, or his cousin said; That you shall not, for he is a stranger, and I will carry him before Mr Burgoyne: then said he, I will go with him to Mr Burgoyne, for he knoweth me very well; a...

BL. JOHN SUGAR, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 16 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 16th of July WELCOME! BLESSED JOHN SUGAR, PRIEST AND MARTYR John Sugar was born at Womborn [Wombourn] in Staffordshire, of a noted family in those parts. He made a good proficiency in his grammar studies at home in his own country; and then was sent to Oxford to Merton College, where he went through his course of philosophy. And now he was upon the point of receiving his degree of bachelor of arts; but there was an oath first to be taken of the queen's supremacy, which he boggled at; and upon this quitted the university. Yet I do not find that he embraced forthwith the catholic religion; on the contrary, we are told, that for some time after he exercised the office of a minister at Cank, in his own country, and there held forth against the pope, and the catholic faith: but the Father of mercies did not suffer him to continue long in this way, but by his heavenly light opened the eyes of his soul to see the beauty of truth; an...
