ST THORLAK THORHALLSON, BISHOP - 23 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 23rd of December WELCOME! SAINT THORLAK THORHALLSON, BISHOP The Church was established in Iceland by the time of Saint Thorlak's birth in 1133. A very pious and bright farmer's son, St Thorlak received extensive religious instruction from a local priest.  HE STUDIED THEOLOGY IN FRANCE AND ENGLAND He was sent to study theology in France and England and was himself ordained a priest at a young age. During the time abroad he vowed to live by the monastic rule of St Augustine . This rule committed a priest not only to celibacy, but also to a life in community without personal possessions, after the manner of the apostles in the Church's earliest days. HE FOUNDED A MONASTERY IN ICELAND Upon his return to Iceland he founded a monastery according to the Augustinian rule, which became renowned as a place of prayer and study. ST JOHN STONE, MARTYR - 23 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 23rd of December WELCOME! SAINT JOHN STONE, MARTYR Blessed John was an English martyr, executed at the Dane-John, Canterbury, probably in December, 1539, for denying the royal supremacy.  AN AUGUSTINIAN FRIAR AND A DOCTOR OF DIVINITY He was an Austin [Augustinian] Friar of Canterbury, and a doctor of divinity. He is probably the Austin Friar of whom Bishop Ingworth complained on 14 December, 1538, that  "at all times he still held and still desired to die for it, that the king may not be head of the Church of England" .  "BE OF GOOD COURAGE" When in prison before his martyrdom  "after an uninterrupted fast of three days, he heard a voice, but without seeing the presence of anyone, calling him by name and exhorting him to be of good courage and not to hesitate to suffer with constancy for the truth of the opinion which he had professed". ST JOHN OF KANTY, PRIEST - 23 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 23rd of December WELCOME! SAINT JOHN OF KANTY, PRIEST St John was born in Kanty, Poland, in 1390. He was ordained and taught at the University of Cracow for some years before becoming a parish priest at Olkuscz. He was an outstanding teacher of the faith, and his holiness and charity to all were noted. He died in 1473. PRAYER: Almighty Father, through the example of John of Kanty may we grow in the wisdom of the saints. As we show understanding and kindness to others, may we receive your forgiveness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 23rd of December WELCOME! SAINT SERVULUS OF ROME, CONFESSOR In Saint Servulus was exemplified what our divine Redeemer has taught us of Lazarus, the poor man full of sores, who lay before the gate of the rich man’s house.  Servulus was a 6th century beggar, and had been afflicted with the palsy from his infancy; so that he was never able to stand, sit upright, lift his hand to his mouth, or turn himself from one side to another.  His mother and brother carried him into the porch of St Clement’s church at Rome, where he lived on the alms of those that passed by.  THEY CARRIED HIM TO ST CLEMENT'S CHURCH Whatever he could spare from his own subsistence he distributed among other needy persons.  The sufferings and humiliation of his condition were a means of which he made the most excellent use for the sanctification of his own soul, by the constant exercise of humility patience, meekness, resignation, and...
