OTWIN, BISHOP OF HILDESHEIM Otwin (Othwin, Othwinus ), bishop of Hildesheim, was a very vigilant caretaker of Christ's sheepfold. He went to his eternal reward in the year 984 (Pertz, mon. scr.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 4th of May WELCOME! SAINT GODARD, BISHOP OF HILDESHEIM, CONFESSOR    Saint Godard [Godehard, Gotthard] was a native of Bavaria [South Germany], and abbot of Niederaltaich, in that country, and reformed likewise the abbeys of Hersfeld, in Hesse, of Tegernsee, in the diocese of Freising, and of Kremsmünster, in that of Passau.  THE FIRST OBJECT OF HIS ATTENTION In 1021, the episcopal chair of Hildesheim falling vacant by the death of St Bernward, St Godard was compelled by St Henry to take upon him that pastoral charge. The relief of the poor, both spiritual and temporal, was every where the first object of his attention.  SEVERAL PLACES BEAR HIS NAME He died on May 4, 1038, and was canonised by Innocent II in 1131. Many places in Germany acknowledge him patron, and several bear his name.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 15th of August WELCOME! SAINT ALTFRID, BISHOP  St Altfrid's [Alfred] feast day is celebrated on August 15, but also in Essen and Hildesheim on August 16. HE TOOK PART IN A COUNCIL OF MAINZ He was a Benedictine monk, became bishop of Hildesheim, Germany, and founded the Abbey in Essen. He is first mentioned by name on October 3. 852, when he took part in a council in Mainz as Bishop of Hildesheim. According to the Hildesheim Chronicle St Altfrid died "rich in days" in 874, from which a year of birth of around 800 is assumed. It seems likely that he belonged to the Saxon nobility. BISHOP OF HILDESHEIM He became Bishop of Hildesheim in succession to Ebbo, who died on March 20 of that year.  In 864, St Altfrid moved the relics of St Marsus from Auxerre to an unknown place in Saxony, most likely to Corvey Abbey .
