ST ADO, ARCHBISHOP OF VIENNE - 16 DECEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 16th of December WELCOME! SAINT ADO, ARCHBISHOP OF VIENNE, CONFESSOR Saint Ado was born in the diocese of Sens, towards Gatinois, about the year 800, and was of one of the richest and most noble families of that country. It was the principal care of his religious parents to seek tutors, masters, and companions who should concur together by their maxims, example, interior spirit, and prudent and earnest instructions to form the morals of their son, and inspire into his soul the most tender and perfect sentiments of Christian piety.  All this they happily found in the monastery of Ferrieres in Gatinois, at that time famous for learning and discipline. The pregnancy of his wit, the solidity of his judgment, his assiduity at his studies, and, above all, his humble obedience and docility, and his sincere piety, gained him the esteem and affections of the abbot Sigulph, and all his masters; and engaged them to redouble the...

ST ALICE, EMPRESS - 16 DECEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 16th of December   WELCOME! SAINT ALICE, OR ADELAIDE, EMPRESS The second kingdom of Burgundy, called also of Arles, was erected by Charles the Bald, emperor and king of France, who, in 879, bestowed Burgundy, Provence, Bresse, and Dauphine, with his title on his brother-in-law Bose, descended by the mother from Lewis Debonnair.  Rudolph or Ralph II, king of Burgundy, was father to Saint Alice [ Saint Adelaide ] whom he left at his death, in 937, only six years old.  At sixteen she was married to Lothaire, king of Italy, by whom she had a daughter named Emma, who was afterwards married to Lothaire, king of France.  A YOUNG WIDOW The death of our saint’s husband, which happened about the year 949, left her a young widow, and the afflictions with which she was visited contributed perfectly to disengage her heart from the world, and make her devote herself to the practice of piety, which had been from her ...

ST HAGGAI, PROPHET - 16 DECEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER   Saints celebrated on the 16th of December   WELCOME! SAINT HAGGAI, PROPHET Aggeus [Haggai], the tenth among the minor prophets of the Old Testament, is called in the Hebrew text, Haggay , and in the Septuagint Haggaios , whence the Latin form Aggeus . It is an abbreviated form of the noun Haggíyyah , " my feast is Yahweh ", a Jewish proper name found in 1 Paralipomenon 6:15, Vulgate (1 Chronicles 6:30). THERE IS GREAT UNCERTAINTY CONCERNING THE PROPHET'S PERSONAL LIFE Great uncertainty prevails also concerning the prophet’s personal life. The book which bears his name is very short, and contains no detailed information about its author. The few passages which speak of him refer simply to the occasion on which he had to deliver a divine message in Jerusalem, during the second year of the reign of the Persian King, Darius I (B.C. 520)  In the second year of the reign of Darius the son of Hystaspes (B.C. 520), Aggeus came forward i...

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 16th of December WELCOME! BLESSED PHILIP SIPHONG ONPHITHAH, MARTYR, AND THE BLESSED MARTYRS OF THAILAND [On] December 16, the Church remembers the Blessed Martyrs of Thailand. In December 1939, the government of the far northern village of Songkhon, Siam (now Thailand), ordered Catholics, under the penalty of death, to deny their Catholic faith. "YOU MUST NOT MENTION GOD HERE, ELSE I'LL KILL YOU ALL" Blessed Philip Siphong Onphithah, a schoolteacher, assumed leadership of the Church in the village during this time of persecution. When he was summoned to go to the sheriff’s office, his wife and children urged Blessed Philip not to go. Nonetheless, Blessed Philip went, but he never returned. On December 15 Blessed Philip was taken into a nearby forest and was shot by government officials. THE POLICE VISITED THEIR CONVENT Blessed Agnes Phila and Blessed Lucy Khambang, both Religious Sisters, picked up the torch of ...
