ST SULPICIUS AND ST SERVILIAN, MARTYRS - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! SAINT SULPICIUS AND SAINT SERVILIAN, MARTYRS Much of the legend of Saint Sulpicius (Sulpitius) and Saint Servilian ( Servilianus ) has been fabulously spun afterwards. The  Roman Martyrology* states merely  that they were restrained from idol sacrifices and converted by the admonitions and miracles of Saint Domitilla. What is absolutely certain is that they sacrificed their lives for Christ during the reign of Emperor Trajan, either in Rome or in Terracina. Their feast is celebrated in the diocese of Augsburg on April 20 ( ritu simpl .), since their relics were presented to the blessed Hariolphus and Erlalphus, the founders of the collegiate church of Saint Vitus in Ellwangen, by Pope Hadrian. This happened around the year 773. The feast of the translation is celebrated there on May 23rd. This explains why they are not mentioned in Piazza's * work. Church art depicts the story of their conver...

ST WIHO, BISHOP OF OSNABRÜCK - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! SAINT WIHO, BISHOP OF OSNABRÜCK Saint Wiho, commemorated on April 20, the first bishop of Osnabrück [Germany] is also called Viho and Wito . A native of Friesland and a pupil of Saint Gregory of Utrecht , Wiho was selected by  Charlemagne  to head the Osnabrück church. Between 780 and 786, Bishop  Agilfred of Liège had built a church there on the orders of Charlemagne , which was subsequently consecrated in honour of  St Peter . The existence of the diocese can be historically documented since 803. According to some - admittedly not completely reliable - sources, he had the bishop's crozier for 32 years and was instrumental in the complete eradication of paganism and the burning of idols. His public veneration, however, is absolutely certain and beyond any doubt.  (Information from  Stadler 's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints,  Volume  5, Augsburg, 1882, p. 787)...

BL. RICHARD SERGEANT, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! BLESSED RICHARD SERGEANT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Sergeant, who sometimes screened himself under the names of Lee and Long, was born in Gloucestershire, of a gentleman's family, and was an alumnus and priest of the English College then residing at Rheims; though he received the order of priesthood, according to Mr Stow, at Lyons. He was a man of learning, and after he had for some time laboured with fruit in gaining souls to Christ, was apprehended, cast into prison, tried and condemned, barely for being a priest, and remaining in the kingdom, contrary to the statute of 27 Elizabeth. Fr Richard Sergeant and   Fr William Thompson were drawn together to Tyburn, and there happily finished their course, being hanged, bowelled and quartered, April 20, 1586. From the Diaries, and Catalogues of Martyrs of Douay College, and from a Manuscript History, kept in the same college, of affairs relating to the...

BLESSED WILLIAM THOMPSON, PRIEST AND MARTYR William Thomson, sometimes known by the name of Blackburn , born in the parish of Blackburn, in Lancashire, alumnus and priest of the college of Rheims, after many labours in the vineyard of his Lord, in administering, in the midst of dangers, the holy sacraments to catholics, and reclaiming heretics from the way of perdition, was apprehended, tried and condemned, for having been made priest by the authority of the see apostolic, and remaining in England contrary to the statute. Fr William Thompson and  Fr Richard Sergeant were drawn together to Tyburn, and there happily finished their course, being hanged, bowelled and quartered, April 20, 1586. From the Diaries, and Catalogues of Martyrs of Douay College, and from a Manuscript History, kept in the same college, of affairs relating to the catholics during the reign of queen Elizabeth, by Dr Champney. ELIZABETH BARTON, VIRGIN - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! ELIZABETH BARTON, VIRGIN Born probably in 1506, executed at Tyburn, April 20, 1534, Elizabeth was called the Nun of Kent . The career of this visionary, whose prophecies led to her execution under Henry VIII, has been the source of a historical controversy which resolves itself into the question: Was she gifted with supernatural knowledge or was she an impostor? In 1525, when nineteen years of age, being then employed as a domestic servant at Aldington, Kent, she had an illness during which she fell into frequent trances and told "wondrously things done in other places whilst she was neither herself present nor yet heard no report thereof." From the first her utterances assumed a religious character and were "of marvellous holiness in rebuke of sin and vice." Her parish priest, Richard Masters, convinced of her sincerity, reported the matter to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who sent a ...

BL. THOMAS TICHBURN, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! BLESSED THOMAS TICHBURN, PRIEST AND MARTYR Colleges at the University of Douai, 16th century     Thomas Tichburn was born of an ancient family, at Hartley in Hampshire. His education abroad was first in the college of Rheims, and afterwards in that of Rome; to which he was sent from Rheims, September 2, 1587. At Rome he was made priest, and from thence was sent upon the English Mission.  Here, he fell into the hands of the adversaries of his faith, and suffered bands and prisons for some years, till, as we have seen above, he was rescued by that bold youth, who lost his own life upon that account.  It was not long, before he was again apprehended, by the means of one Atkinson, a fallen priest, who meeting him in the streets, and knowing him, ceased not to cry out, a priest, a priest, stop the priest, till he was seized upon; though Mr Tichburn, to stop his mouth, and carry off the m...

BL. ROBERT WATKINSON, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! BLESSED ROBERT WATKINSON, PRIEST AND MARTYR Robert Watkinson was born at Hemingborough, in Yorkshire, and had his education abroad, partly in the college of Douay, and partly in that of Rome: he went through his course of philosophy in the latter; but was obliged, for his health, to return to Douay to study his divinity: but the change of air made no great alteration in the state of his health; so that his superiors thought it best to present him to holy orders, and send him over into England. He was ordained priest at Arras, and on the third of April following, began his journey for England.  Whilst he was at London, under the care of a physician, he was betrayed by one John Fewether, a false brother, apprehended, arraigned and condemned, on the 17th of April, and executed on the 20th of the same month. He suffered with great constancy, at Tyburn, in the company of Mr Tichburn and Mr Page. There ...

BL. FRANCIS PAGE, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! BLESSED FRANCIS PAGE, PRIEST AND MARTYR  Francis Page,  S.J. , was born, according to the bishop of Chalcedon's catalogue, of a gentleman's family, at Harrow on the Hill, in the county of Middlesex; or as some others say, at Antwerp; which it seems, he pleaded at his trial, but was not regarded. He was brought up in the protestant religion, and to the study of the law; and was. for some time, clerk to a noted lawyer in town. Here he fell in love with a young gentle-woman, a catholic; and partly upon her account, partly by the persuasion of a catholic companion, was induced to make a more serious inquiry into matters of religion. His friend brought him to Father Gerard Thomson, his own confessor, who gave him full satisfaction in his doubts, and reconciled him to the church.  But this was not all; Mr Page not only become a catholic, but, by degrees, was quite weaned from earthly affection...

BL. ANTHONY PAGE, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! BLESSED ANTHONY PAGE, PRIEST AND MARTYR Anthony Page (Antony Page) was born of a gentleman's family, at Harrow, on the Hill, in the county of Middlesex. He performed his studies abroad, in Douay college, then residing at Rheims, where he was made priest in 1591, and sent upon the mission, January 3, 1591-2.  Dr Champney, who was his contemporary at the college, tells us that he was a man of wonderful meekness, of a virginal modesty and purity, and of a more than common learning and piety; who, for his singular candour of mind, and sweetness of behaviour, was dear to all.  Falling into the hands of the adversaries of his faith, after suffering much in prison, and maintaining, by disputation, his religion, in some conferences with the ministers, he was condemned to die, as in cases of high treason, merely on account of his priestly character, and was drawn, hanged, and quartered at York, April ...

BL. JAMES BELL, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! BLESSED JAMES BELL, PRIEST AND MARTYR [Blessed James Bell was an English] priest and martyr, born at Warrington in Lancashire, England, probably about 1520. For the little known of him we depend on the account published four years after his death by Bridgewater in his "Concertatio" (1588), and derived from a manuscript which was kept at Douay when Challoner wrote his "Missionary Priests" in 1741, and is now in the Westminster Diocesan Archives. A few further details were collected by Challoner, and others are supplied by the State Papers.  Having studied at Oxford he was ordained priest in Mary's reign, but unfortunately conformed to the established Church under Elizabeth, and according to the Douay MS "ministered their bare few sacraments about 20 years in diverse places of England." Finally deterred by conscience from the cure of souls and reduced to destitution, he ...

BL. JOHN FINCH, MARTYR - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! BLESSED JOHN FINCH, MARTYR [Blessed John Finch was an English] martyr. Born c. 1548, he was a yeoman of Eccleston, Lancashire, and a member of a well-known old Catholic family, but he appears to have been brought up in schism. When he was twenty years old he went to London where he spent nearly a year with some cousins at Inner Temple.  While there he was forcibly struck by the contrast between Protestantism and Catholicism in practice and determined to lead a Catholic life. Failing to find advancement in London he returned to Lancashire where he was reconciled to Catholic Church.  He then married and settled down, his house becoming a centre of missionary work, he himself harbouring priests and aiding them in every way, besides acting as catechist.  His zeal drew on him the hostility of the authorities, and at Christmas, 1581, he was entrapped into bringing a priest, George Ostliffe, to...

ODA OF HAINAULT, VIRGIN - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! VENERABLE ODA OF HAINAULT, VIRGIN This godly virgin of Hainault was the of noble decent; her parents were called Wibert and Thescalina. From infancy Oda preferred prayer to the world and its joys.  To her parents, who wished to force her into marriage, she firmly declared that Christ alone was as her bridegroom, and that, although she always was a dutiful daughter, she would have to disobey them in this particular matter. Since this did not help and there were always new requests and attempts at coercion, she did not think it was a sin if she mutilated herself and cut off her nose, which she did, and she threatened further self-harm if her parents did not allow her freedom of choice of her vocation. Finally, they permitted Oda to enter the convent at Gode Hoge, where, after an extremely godly and pious life, she passed to her eternal reward in A.D. 1158. The title "Venerable" is generally assigne...
